Thanks to all who came out for PechaKucha Night El Paso Vol.26!

Big thanks to all our amazing presenters who braved the big stage at the Plaza Theatre last week to present at PechaKucha Night El Paso Vol.26. Thanks to everyone who attended, a great time was had by all with the evening opened by Walt Stroney playing the Theatre’s one of a kind Wurlitzer Organ. “Just Beneath the Surface” was coordinated and presented by PechaKucha Night El Paso and Texas Society of Architects - an evening of engaging PechaKucha presenters that revealed a cross section through the creative heart of the borderland. The event was part of the Texas Society of Architects 83rd Annual Conference and Design Expo happening in El Paso from October 27th - 29th.

PechaKucha El Paso has been bringing together voices from across our community since 2008 that blur boundaries and elevate the connections between our two sister cities. Devised in Tokyo by renowned architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham in 2003, PechaKucha Nights (Peh-cha Koo-cha) have since exploded to over 1,200 cities around the world. The word “PechaKucha” is Japanese for “chit chat.” The PechaKucha 20x20 presentation format is a slide show of 20 images, each auto-advancing after 20 seconds. It’s non-stop and the presenter has 400 seconds to tell their story, with visuals guiding the way.

PECHAKUCHA PROFILE: David Morrison

Contemplative writer David Morrison takes us on a journey of image and spoken word that celebrates a vision of desert spirituality though the lens of the Japanese poetic art of Haiku. The images are not professional, but rather the simple snapshot captures of a lifelong desert walker. As David explains, there is a beauty that can be experienced in the scarcity of desert if we come to it with contemplative eyes. The word, contemplation, in Latin, means to gaze intently upon. Accordingly, it is possible to walk in desert landscapes and witness its emptiness until a stunning beauty arises. Further, this beauty begins to gaze into the beholder, and one is transformed forever. In the Irish language, to contemplate, means to place oneself at the edge of waiting. The desert is a liminal place where sublime beauty may be encountered. It is a beauty that requires one to seek deeply for it in the midst of emptiness, aridity, and death. Former educator David Morrison currently serving as a spiritual director for Desert Rain Community — a contemporary community of Christian contemplative monks residing in the high desert plain of Chaparral, New Mexico just outside of El Paso. David can be heard weekly on Desert Rain Community Radio podcast and will have his new book of Haiku; Desolate Beauty: The Book of Light and Shadow will be available soon at the ruined.com.

PECHAKUCHA PROFILE: Patrick Gabaldon.

Attorney by day and artist by night, Patrick Gabaldon was born and raised in the Sun City of El Paso. As an experienced attorney — Patrick has a demonstrated history of working in the criminal justice system in El Paso, Hudsepth, and Culberson county. But his real passion is in art which began shortly after returning home to the vibrant color and vast expanse of the desert sky. His time away gave him a new perspective on the often forgotten west Texas desert. Gabaldon took his new found inspiration and made it his quest to show others his colorful interpretation of the borderland. Patrick will present Stay Sharp, Be Prickly and Bloom Brightly — a phrase that captures the spirit he sees every day here on the border. Each bit can mean very different things to different people and much like the Rio Grande, it can shift day to day. Let Patrick tell you how his theme impacts him daily with the hope that you too can learn to Stay Sharp. Be Prickly. Bloom Brightly. Gabaldon’s work can be found on display across our fair city. His work has been exhibited in restaurants, art galleries, the El Paso International Airport, Southwest University Ballpark, the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and his work even adorns the hallowed walls of esteemed architecture studios. PECHAKUCHA PROFILE: Peter Svarzbein

Peter Svarzbein is a photographer, artist and now City Council Representative for District 1 in El Paso as well as Mayor Pro Tempore. The lens based artist returned home to El Paso in 2010 to launch a multimedia campaign as part of his graduate thesis work. The campaign entitled the El Paso Transnational Trolley Project imagined the revival of the historic line that crossed the International border to connect El Paso with its sister city of Ciudad Juarez until 1974. Peter’s work inspired the imagination of El Pasoans and stirred citizens to action in preparation for the El Paso 2012 Quality of Life Bond. Listen as Peter passionately tells the story of how a underground art campaign grew into a movement that became reality with the reconstruction of a new streetcar route in downtown El Paso. Today our restored PCC Streetcars roll on this line with new life once again, thanks in no small part to this art campaign. Peter is not content to stop here and is actively gathering political support to push for the restoration of trolley service crossing over the international bridge - reconnecting Juarez and El Paso's fabled international streetcar service. Peter's passion will inspire us to consider how art can operate on a grand city scale to improve our quality of life. "These were vehicles of economic mobility."

Alexandra Cortez will discuss the application of theoretical and philosophical thought through a gendered framework through her artistic experimentation of watercolor portraits. Art centered around the single female image, is discerned through one's own subjectivity. If specific assemblages of form define our attitudes toward a subject, then a reconfiguring of the individual onto an environment redraws the frame around “identity”. A comparative analysis of feminist theory, particle physics and social philosophy challenges usual habits of thought in the rendering of the female image.
