What inspired you to join the NAACP El Paso Branch Executive Board, and what motivates you to continue serving in this role?
My decision to join the NAACP El Paso Executive Board was greatly influenced by the organization's mission and the urgent need for transformation in the community. I aspired to play a crucial role in advancing the political, educational, social, and economic standing of African Americans and diverse racial and ethnic minorities in El Paso. The cohesive teamwork and the commendable achievements of Unit-6175 have been pivotal in fueling my dedication to continue serving as the Vice President. It is truly encouraging to witness the increasing membership and our triumphant fundraising endeavors for scholarships and programs. Moreover, the growing participation in various NAACP committees signifies a promising outlook for the community.
How do you see the local and National NAACP's role in advancing civil rights and social justice in today's society?
As a member of the local NAACP, I believe that our organization plays a crucial role in advancing civil rights and social justice in today's society. One of our key focuses is on increasing voter turnout, voter education, and community involvement. I am particularly concerned about the low voter turnout in El Paso, where only 11% of registered voters participated in the 2024 primary election. This election is not about Democratic or Republican; it's about democracy. Participatory democracy focuses on ensuring that citizens have the opportunity to be involved in decision-making on matters that affect their lives.
Our efforts are directed towards not only registering voters but also educating the community about important issues rather than just the candidates. Recently, our local chapter organized a Voter town Hall Meeting to emphasize the significance of voter turnout, and we are actively planning more town hall meetings and collaborating with other organizations to raise awareness about critical issues for the upcoming election. Our committees are also working diligently to pinpoint areas that require our focused efforts within the community.
Additionally, the National and local NAACP are actively working to demand reforms in the areas of structural discrimination, discrimination in our schools, and unjust policing. It's vital to tackle these issues where they arise, advocating for reform through legislative changes and holding elected and appointed leaders accountable for policies that unfairly target or penalize minorities.
