The El Paso Symphony Orchestra Association is deeply saddened by the loss of a dear friend and supporter, Mrs. Betty Jo Graham, known to many as BJ.
BJ was a well-known El Paso philanthropist. She supported the arts community through her generosity and volunteer work. Born in Kansas, BJ Graham studied voice under American Opera Baritone John Charles Thomas and toured as a solo singer performing in church settings in New York City, Las Vegas and other major cities in the United States. Her career was very colorful. During World War II, BJ worked in the engineering division on top secret projects, one of which was retrofitting the ENOLA GAY B-29 Bomber. Her love for music took her all over the world attending operas and symphonies in some of the great halls of Europe, the United States and Asia.
Since moving to El Paso in the 1970’s, BJ took an active interest in the well-being of El Paso’s performing arts community and had a special place in her heart for the El Paso Symphony Orchestra (EPSO) and especially the El Paso Symphony Youth Orchestras (EPSYO).
In addition to her personal financial generosity to the EPSO and EPSYO, she took an active advisory role in fund development, board development and other aspects as needed.
BJ commissioned new music arrangements, supported young emerging artists and was interested in introducing opportunities to develop new audiences, always with an eye to the future. As a true visionary, she knew that the youth of El Paso played an important role in the future of El Paso’s arts community. She regularly supported student fundraising efforts, scholarship programs and youth orchestra master classes. 15 years ago, BJ founded the “Rope For Hope” fundraising campaign which raises funds to provide financial aid for students to participate in the EPSYO.
BJ Graham is the undisputed Grand Dame of the musical arts organizations in El Paso. We will miss you so much! With much love and gratitude, may you rest in peace BJ.

Live-with-film concerts are a hit, but do movie scores belong on the concert stage? Is it time to begin integrating film music into the concert hall as opposed to isolating it in pops shows?
