What is TMJ?
TMJ stands for the Temporomandibular Joint. The TMJ is the joint formed by the temporal bone of the skull with the lower jaw or mandible. These joints move each time we chew, talk or even swallow. The TMJ is actually a sliding joint and not a ball-and-socket like most joints in the human body. Ligaments, catrilage, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels run in around and through the TMJ.
While the most common term for disorders of the joint is TMJ, its also known as Temporomandibular Disorder or TMD. These are used interchangeably in most literature and case studies.
What Causes TMJ Disorders?
TMJ syndrome occurs when the joints are misaligned or malfunctioning in some way that causes excess pressure. The condtion was first identified by otolaryngologist, J.B. Costen in 1934.
There are many causes of TMJ syndrome such as skeletal malformations, trauma, whiplash, and spinal or skull subluxations. Any of these malformations prevent the muscles, bones, and joints from working together properly.
Some Signs and Symptoms of TMJ: Pain or tenderness of your jaw, aching pain in and around your ear, difficulty chewing or discomfort while chewing, aching facial pain, locking of the joint (making it difficult to open or close your mouth), headache, uncomfortable bite, and/or an uneven bite.
How Can Chiropractic Help the Temporomandibular joint (TMJ)?
Chiropractic care for TMJ can ease pain by correcting the misalignment between the spine and nervous system. Chiropractic can be effective at reducing the pain associated with TMJ, either when used alone or as a complement to other treatments. This is because, rather than change the diet or modify the teeth, it relaxes the muscles, adjusts the joint and uses specific trigger points to accurately re-position the jaw. When done successfully, this will not only relieve pain in the short run (as would medications or eating soft foods), but it will help prevent TMJ pain from returning.
