'He did amazing things every day': Mercyhurst University mourns autism advocate Brad McGarry McGarry died Sunday after a two-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Sad news from our University President about the passing of Brad McGarry, our AIM program pioneer and all around great human:
Dear Members of the Mercyhurst Community,
It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of one our most beloved community members—a man whose steadfast devotion pioneered a program of national renown all in the name of what the Sisters would call “serving the underserved.”
Brad McGarry, former director of the Autism Initiative at Mercyhurst (AIM), died this morning of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He leaves behind his loving wife, Aimee, and five children, Connor, Brayden, Nico, Nate, and Mason.
In many ways, Brad was given a unique opportunity to affect people’s lives and he did it with an extraordinary generosity of spirit. He possessed a profound gift to make whoever was in his presence feel valued and dignified. He will be remembered as a pioneer, an inspiring mentor, a stalwart advocate, and a man who made space for everyone.
Funeral arrangements will be handled through Burton Quinn Scott and visitation will take place at times to be announced this Thursday and Friday. Plans are also underway for a memorial service this Saturday in Christ the King Chapel. I will share more complete details, and a fuller tribute to Brad’s life, in the near future.
On behalf of the university, I offer my prayers and sincere condolences to Brad’s family, friends, colleagues, and students during this time of mourning.
Yours in Mercy,
Kathleen A. Getz, Ph.D.
