The waiter carry is an excellent exercise to practice and improve shoulder and trunk stability. With the use of a kettlebell, this movement is even more challenging, as the center of mass (COM) of the weight is both smaller and moved further away from the shoulder joint. This is opposed to a dumbbell where the COM is directly at the center of the grip, making the moment arm smaller and easier for your shoulder to stabilize. Either way, this exercise not only strengthens your shoulder and improves stability, but it can improve proprioception, balance, and decrease your risk of rotator cuff injury.

The Biodex is one of our favorite rehabilitation tools. It can be used for post-operative strength testing, isolated joint strengthening, progressive strength testing to identify when athletes can return to their sports, and it can even move joints passively through set ranges of motion for patients that have functionally restricting pathologies. 🩻💪

When it comes to manual therapy, we like to think of the body’s static structures as train tracks. Just like a train, in order for the body be able to move efficiently, the “tracks” need to be aligned and lain correctly, otherwise your movement could be limited or painful. Our physical therapist enroll in continued education courses, and practice with each other to insure they are well trained in various manual techniques, so we can incorporate it as a part of the treatment plank to fit each patient’s individual condition. 👍

🛑⚠️Read Caption⚠️🛑: Stability vs. Balance training

Stability training refers to training the ability to control the body while moving. Balance training would involve maintaining control of the body in a still position. Training both stability and balance is essential to decrease the risk of injury or persistent chronic pains for anyone. However, we consistently see patients who have excellent balance, but continue to have pain when they move because of a lack of stability.

Natalie, previously had chronic low back pain when running due to a lack of stability causing sheering at the Lumbo-sacral junction. Thanks to consistent her work on single leg stability over the past couple of months, she has been able to get back to running without any pain. Here are just a couple examples of exercises she has been doing to improve stability and decrease the sheering in her low back.

Quad vs. Glute dominant movement patterns!

As our Physical Therapist, Luke, explains, neither of these forms are wrong. When patient’s come into our clinic with pain or instability while moving/lifting, the first question we ask in deciding how to teach movement patterns is, “What is the goal?”

For example, if a patient has symptoms caused by trunk instability and/or inactive glutes, the goal would be to teach them hip dominant movements without pain. An example of when a patient would train more quad dominant movements would be if their symptoms are predominately caused by quad weakness (typically post knee surgery or patella pain). Neither of these lifting patterns should cause pain!!!

Protect your Pelvic Floor!!! ⬇️

Everyone has a pelvic floor. It consists of muscle, fascia and ligaments that form the floor of your core and your pelvis. The pelvic floor supports the bladder and bowels (and for women, the uterus). Just like any other part of the body, the pelvic floor is vulnerable to injury. Some common complaints that could warrant a pelvic floor exam can include, but are not limited to; hip and back pain, groin and pelvic pain, pre/during/post pregnancy, cyst/hysterectomy/prostate removal, prostate inflammation, painful in*******se, f***l or urinary incontinence, constipation or abdominal or genitalia surgery.

Here are some tips to help your pelvic floor:

Exercise Your Core and Pelvic Floor
Exercises like Kegel bracing, planks, ball roll outs, and functional movements like squats and deadlifts all are great ways to exercise both your core and your pelvic floor. It is necessary to have both strong and reactive core and pelvic floor muscles in order to maintain healthy function in daily activities, like bladder, bowel, and sexual health.

Exhale During Lifting
Without even realizing it, it is common to hold ones breath when doing daily activities like carrying groceries or lifting weights. This actually creates an excessive strain on the pelvic floor, that over time, will actually weaken it. Instead, practice exhaling when lifting to reduce the pressure on pelvic floor and move it to the core muscles.

Have a Custom Plan
If you want to learn more about pelvic floor health, visit one of our trained physical therapists who can help you out with a custom plan.

“Sitting is the new smoking.” -Jon Runyeon
For decades research has consistently shown that long periods of sitting in the same positions, significantly decreases blood flow to lumbar spine (Grandjean & Hunting, 1977). Subsequently, sitting increases back muscle activity, vertebral disc pressure, and is associated with low back pain (Makhsous et al., 2009). At Tensegrity we have consistently seen patients who have sedentary occupations come in with low back pain/stiffness and neck pain/stiffness, and this number has only increased since the start of the pandemic.

At Tensegrity, we believe that the common conception of, “My back hurts because I’m getting old,” does not need to attribute to you or anybody that you know. By simply setting an alarm every 30 minutes, to remind yourself to stand up and move for 3-5 minutes, you essentially create a pump to allow fluid and nutrients to flow through and around the spine. Furthermore you allow those active muscles in you back to relax and move, decreasing tension and increasing mobility.
