Thank you to Dr. Khanna and Dr. Gordon for having us on their podcast, Diagnosing Inequality: Exploring Racial Disparities in Veterinary Medicine.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” Our guest in this episode says she’s heard quite a few children of color answer that question by saying they’d like to become veterinarians. Unfortunately, statistics indicate such kids usually end up in other professions.

Educator Megan Scholer and her husband, Dr. Ian Scholer, DVM, started a nonprofit in Georgia called Vets of All Colors to give K-12 learners the resources and support they need to become veterinarians or vet med staff members. Learn what their non-profit is doing to inspire children of color to pursue their interest in the field.

🐾Your role in the profession?
4th year veterinary student at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, Co-founder, President of the Association of Asian Veterinary Medical Professionals

👌🏾Why is proactively sharing pronouns (eg on email sigs, zoom profiles, stethoscope clips, etc) important?
Pronouns are an important part of someone's identity. For individuals who haven't had to worry about another person using the wrong pronouns for them, it may not seem that important. However, sharing pronouns in our day-to-day lives provides others the opportunity to correctly validate and respect gender identity.

🏳️‍🌈How have you been impacted by ?
PrideVMC has been responsible for a lot of the education I have received on LGBTQ+ inclusion and diversity. I also appreciate how involved PrideVMC is in fellowship with other affinity organizations, which has greatly assisted my organization in its foundation.

🏅Why do you think associations such as PrideVMC are important to the veterinary profession? Organizations representing populations of individuals are essential to advocate for the rights of the population and fight for effective inclusion and diversity. Support and representation is an added bonus with affinity organizations that provides a space for individuals to go to when they need it.

👍🏾👍🏿👍Why are activities important to you?
Celebrating all that makes a person who they are should be done every day in my opinion, but Pride-related activities and Pride month especially are important to realize just how valued the Pride community is. This population has historically faced so much adversity and hostility, but has progressed so much in the past few decades. There is still a long way to go in the fight for true equity and inclusion of the Pride community, but I think they deserve this month and more to celebrate everything of who they are alongside their community and allies.

💪🏿💪🏾💪🏻In what way do you think allies are important to any marginalized group?
An ally uses their privilege to support and advocate for a marginalized group. Allies must be willing to acknowledge their privilege in a space and open to educating themselves on topics and issues affecting marginalized groups. Allyship is not easy - there are difficult conversations to be had and times where allies may be wrong in their method of advocating for a marginalized group. It is imperative that allies continue to work hard in being a trusted individual aiming to do good for a marginalized group. Listening and learning from marginalized individuals, in my opinion, is the easiest way to become an ally and go beyond performative allyship/surface allyship.
