From Abhijata Iyengar...
My dear friends,
We are now in a time and situation that we never imagined. We always believed it has happened to "them" and will not happen to "us". Time tells us that each one is as vulnerable as the other. The whole world, as one body, is deeply affected.
Just like everybody else, I am also deeply concerned with the way things are turning out. None of us knows for certain what lies ahead of us, but I am sure that this too shall pass. If each one of us can act responsibly, we will see a better future.
We are confined to our homes and Nature has forced upon us a time to just pause. Though courage is an asset for a yoga practitioner, equally important is sensitivity to the present moment. This is a forced time for self-study for us. Your practice sessions now can be so enriching because you are practically locked down. Take up asanas, pranayama, concepts and books that you always shoved under the carpet. We always complained we had no time on our hands. Here it is. Find the joy in quiet practice sessions. Find the actions and responses in each asana and pranayama.
It is also an opportunity to sit back and revisit any of our actions, reactions and decisions. In the hustle-bustle of everyday living, we had taken many things for granted and did not quite reflect on those, both on the mat and off the mat. Here is our time to do so.
The Institute has been getting emails about the deadlines for assessments according to the old system, new certification system etc. Please do not worry about those things at all. That is not at all priority now. We will take that up later. These can all be easily sorted out later. For now, just be well and keep others well.
I implore you to adhere to the rules laid out by your governing authorities. Please do not step out for classes, practice sessions, meetings etc. We owe it to our friends and families, to stay put where we are. The whole world, in this pandemic has rediscovered a spirit of unity. Let us hold on to it and act sensitively.
These are difficult times indeed. As yoga students, we understand that we need to be patient and act responsibly.
A shloka in Bhagavad Gita explains well our duties now.
yajña-dāna-tapaḥ-karma
na tyājyaḿ kāryam eva tat
yajño dānaḿ tapaś caiva
pāvanāni manīṣiṇām
Acts of sacrifice, charity and penance are not to be given up; they must be performed. Indeed, sacrifice, charity and penance purify even the great souls. (18.5)
Penance or tapas is done for oneself. It should be our austere resolve and restraint to be in our place of stay and follow the rules laid down by our governing authorities. Stay home is the mantra now.
Dana which is translated as charity is actually an act of giving. What better way to follow dana now than to stay indoors and give up our urge to socialise. It is our social duty to not put others in danger.
Yajna which is translated as sacrifice is an offering we make to Nature. It is a symbolic spiritual exchange between oneself and Nature. Each one of us should in solidarity fight this outbreak. Each one of us can make a difference today and give the world a chance to rebuild.
In a far corner of the world, I pray for the health and well-being of each one of us. Please take care.
With great affection,
Abhijata Iyengar

From IYNAUS:
As we already know, COVID-19 is spreading and citizens in the U.S., who may have been exposed to the virus, have begun to be quarantined. Please take the appropriate steps to ensure the well-being of yourself, the students and, if you own a studio, the teachers. Here is some excellent advice sent out by the Iyengar Yoga Association of Greater N.Y. to their membership:
Before and after every class, wash your hands with soap and water vigorously for 20 seconds. Also wash your hands after using the restroom.
Avoid touching your face.
If you have a fever, cough, or cold, please stay at home and see your health care provider if appropriate.
If you need to cough or sneeze please do so into a tissue or your elbow if a tissue is not available. Discard the used tissue into the garbage bin immediately after use and then wash your hands thoroughly.
Feel free to bring your own yoga props to class.
Practicing yoga can help support and strengthen your immune system, as well as diminish anxiety and stress. This sequence was given by Guruji when RIMYI was closed due to a viral pandemic.

in a nation where yoga is part of the fitness industry, and thousands of teachers are churned out annually after as few as 200 hours for the sake of commerce and capital, and free yoga classes abound, as well as pricier gimmicks ranging from wine to w**d to goats in barns, what is the point of Iyengar Yoga? why take 4, 5, 6+ years to get certified when you can do it in 6 mos? why no music, why no heated room, why no fancy labeled clothes, and what's with the bloomers? raise your hand if you appreciate no-gimmick, straight-no-chaser, tell-it-like-it-is yoga, where the instructor is not there to flatter you, or to "lead a practice," but to actually teach you something, and hold you accountable to a lineage-based consciousness and ethic. it's not about the fancy pose, the trendy location, or the latest gimmick, it's about dissolving our egos to remove the obstacles to change, and facing ourselves with utter honesty so that we can heal ourselves. as we do so, we become more available and present to our neighbors and our communities, so that we co-create the world we want to live in. don't come to iyengar yoga to distract yourself. come to face yourself.
How Iyengar Yoga gave three people their lives back after suffering injury, abnormality and pain “Great to see yoga therapy taught by people who really know what they’re doing” Bullet damage, a fractured spine and scoliosis; three people who were suffering from pain and lack of movement turned to a form of yoga taught by B.K.S. Yoga Circle | Iyengar Yoga with Laurie Blakeney Yoga Circle is a yoga studio located in Chicago’s River North area. We offer introductory classes for those new to yoga, as well as a wide range of classes and workshops for students who already have experience with yoga.
“Even as the body ages and is able to do less, there are subtleties that reveal themselves, which would be invisible to younger or more athletic bodies. You have to create love and affection for your body, for what it can do for you. Love must be incarnated in the smallest pore of the skin, the smallest cell of the body, to make them intelligent so they can collaborate with all the other ones, in the big republic of the body.”
This love must radiate from you to others. Practitioners of the asanas alone often forget that yoga is for cultivating the head and heart. Patanjali talked about friendliness, compassion, gladness, and joy. Friendliness and grace are two qualities that are essential for the yoga student”

When you understand the asanas you realize size does not matter - that the integrity and vitality of asana can be presented no matter what size. this is often overlooked in pop culture yoga. personally i cringe looking at them sometimes.
this style of teaching, the asanas, the props, the rope wall, etc will look very familiar to iyengar yoga practitioners! whether or not B. K. S. Iyengar is acknowledged or not, these poses are right out of his teachings. we are thrilled to see the proliferation of his methodology. we have many outstanding iyengar yoga teachers and practitioners "of size" that we honor and benefit from tremendously, including members of the iyengar family.
