ELMSC seeks to reach out to worldwide Chinese with confessional Lutheran teachings
so that Lutheran missions lead to Lutheran churches.
The Evangelical Lutheran Mission Society for the Chinese (ELMSC) is organized around the old Bleckmar Mission motto of “Lutheran missions must lead to Lutheran churches.” The society exists to support the formation and strengthening of Confessional Lutheran Chinese churches worldwide, in part through Lutheran Chinese pastoral formation and the development of Lutheran Chinese theological resources

Pictures from our recent 9th Annual Mandarin Chinese seminar on the campus of Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana (CTS-FW), are now posted on our webpage (link below). In some respects, this was probably our most "successful" seminar yet, in part, as there were several attendees who are now seriously considering enrolling in either an MDiv, MA, or Deaconess Studies program at CTS-FW.

Here's a fun recent addition to the CHI collection: Deborah Blumer's "Called According to His Purpose: Missionary Letters from China"! Blumer's nearly-500 page work includes approximately 150 photographs, correspondence, and other documents detailing the life and ministry of Lutheran missionary to China George Lillegard and his wife Bernice. It's a great one to check out if you're interested in what life was like in China for Christians a hundred years ago.
This work is now in our permanent collection, which means you can view it in-person at our archive! No plans to "meet me in St. Louis" anytime soon? It's available for purchase in print or ebook, too: https://www.amazon.com/Called-According-His-Purpose-Missionary/dp/0578014548

"My Call to Taiwan is to serve as a “theological educator,” which just means that I teach God’s Word to many or to few, to pastors and to new (and sometimes non-) Christians. My latest opportunity to teach is at Salvation Lutheran Church, where we now regularly worship. Every Sunday morning I teach a small group the Augsburg Confession. We look at the text of the confession itself, but spend at least half our time looking at some of the many Bible verses from which the confession is drawn," writes missionary Rev. Dr. Michael Paul, serving in Taiwan. Learn more: lcms.org/paul
Save the dates - The 2024 9th Annual Chinese Seminar on Holy Scripture and Luther's Small Catechism: June 6-10, 2024 (as always, on the campus of Concordia Theological Seminary, Ft. Wayne, IN). 2024年的研討會將在6月6-10日舉行。
TODAY IN HISTORY: On August 7, 1913, Rev. E. L. Arndt preached his first sermon in Chinese.
Eduard Louis Arndt was born on December 19, 1864 in Bukowin, Pomerania, Germany (now in Poland). In 1866 he immigrated to Chicago, and would go on to attend college in Fort Wayne and seminary in Saint Louis. He served as pastor at Trinity in East Saginaw, Michigan from 1885 until 1897, when he took a position as a professor at Concordia College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He then made a seismic career change: he helped found a Lutheran mission to China in 1912, and in early 1913 he arrived to Hankow, China where he would serve as a missionary until his death on April 17, 1929. Arndt's mission became an official LCMS mission in 1917, by which point his congregation included 17 baptized members.

Church windows: I don't create stained-glass windows, so designing them comes only in special opportunities. Flanking the altar, these represent the Old Testament and New Testament, and were executed by local artisans. What is even more special is that the artisans -- and the Lutheran church which contains the windows -- reside in Taiwan.
