But when Ellie and her single mom have to move to a tiny town in Oklahoma to help out her grandfather after he's in a car accident, the challenges start to mount. Her new school is nowhere near fully accessible, plus she's dealing with the stigma of being both the "new kid in the wheelchair" and a "trailer park kid." Fortunately, two quirky new friends -- the first friends she's ever had who see HER, not the wheelchair -- give her a new goal: convince her mom that this little town is just the place she's meant to be.

Kids will fall in love with that determined Ellie and her friends, would-be singer Coralee and "mega geek" Bert! Sumner drew on the experiences of her son, who has CP, to realistically capture the challenges faced by kids with disabilities, which can be not only physical but also social and emotional. At the same time, she successfully shows how Ellie is much more than her disability, giving this smart and fiercely independent character a fully developed personality and a vibrant voice that shines through.
