A steady, reliable income is one of the best ways to help an individual exit homelessness. UpSpire, Presbyterian Night Shelter's employment-based social enterprise, is making a huge impact by lowering or removing the barriers to employment for so many individuals. UpSpire gives our employees a choice, a voice, and a pathway to stability. Our inspired workforce benefits our customers, too, as it allows us to provide them personalized services tailored to fit their specific needs!

A huge shout out and thank you to all who made our Back to School Bash at both Morris Foundation Family Services Center and our Journey Home Housing at Seminary a huge success! Our kiddos had a great time and received so many needed school supplies so they are set for the first day of school.

At Morris Foundation Family Services Center, thank you to One Main Financial for the school supplies, White's Chapel for the Kona Ice, and National Charity League for school supplies and organizing the tables.

At Journey Home Housing at Seminary, thank you to Pathway Church for the school supplies, backpacks, pantry packs, pizza, Kona Ice, and a bounce house, not to mention the volunteer time! Our kiddos are so grateful!

We are so happy to have Tarrant County Volunteer Attorney Services visiting True Worth Place today. They are providing a free General Advice Clinic for our guests here. Each guest is able to see a lawyer and present them with a legal issue they are facing. The lawyers then help the guest determine the best course of action and next steps. Thank you, TCVAS! We are grateful for the partnership!

Temperatures are ticking up again this week. As a reminder, if you or someone you know needs a place to cool off, these places (including True Worth Place) are acting as cooling stations with extended hours through September 16. Stay safe out there!

UpSpire is expanding! Not only does the new Warehouse service line allow UpSpire to grow our business, it allows us to employe a whole other group of people needing work.

“There was a sector of our population that, unfortunately, we were missing,” states Daryl R Davis II , Vice President of Workforce and Career Development, “and so [adding] the warehouse gave us the opportunity to employ individuals who are facing challenges with many of our labor-intensive opportunities that they aren’t able to do.”

One of the ways Presbyterian Night Shelter works to break the cycle of homelessness is through our Family and Individual Rapid Exit (FIRE) program. This program is designed to reduce and eliminate barriers that people entering homelessness are facing. Working with case managers, people in the program are able to access temporary rent and deposit subsidization to quickly get them into a house or apartment and exit homelessness - or avoid falling into it all together. Then, each month they take on a larger and larger portion of the rent until they are ultimately covering the entire cost themselves. This model allows an opportunity for people to gain their footing back to self-reliance, while keeping them under a roof. In 2023, our FIRE program moved 328 individuals (including 175 children!) out of homelessness.

Presbyterian Night Shelter wishes a safe and happy Independence Day to all! Our facilities will operate as usual today, and True Worth Place will stay open with expanded hours until 6:00pm as a cooling station for those who remain unsheltered. Have fun and stay safe out there!

For the 10th consecutive day, dangerous heat and humidity have lingered in North Texas, prompting heat advisories in Tarrant County through the July 4th holiday. Presbyterian Night Shelter and True Worth Place both play a vital role in the safety and wellbeing of our guests and neighbors. Our guests count on us for water, emergency services, an overnight bed, a meal, or even just a place to cool off.

True Worth Place has expanded hours over the summer to help meet those needs of our most vulnerable neighbors, while our overnight Shelter is completely filled, operating at capacity. Your generosity today can help make a great difference in the lives of our neighbors at times like this, helping us ensure we continue to provide relief from these extreme conditions to those who need us the most. Please consider donating today by clicking the link below. Thank you!

The kitchen staff of Presbyterian Night Shelter, along with a good numbers of volunteers, put out over 1,750 meals each day. This includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner for our Shelter guests across our campus, lunch for True Worth Place guests, and brown bag lunches for our UpSpire crews. One of the key ingredients in each and every meal: Compassion. This month's video gives a little insight into how our crew manages to keep people fed, and how the generosity of our donors and vendors is vital to the success of the program.

We are into the swing of Summer and, thanks to our amazing volunteers, are making the most of it for our kiddos! This past weekend, Wedgwood Baptist Church put on a huge block party for our families at Journey Home Housing at Seminary. Plus, MFUGE, Young Men's Service League, and National Charity League have all stepped up to put on fun activities, like Splash Day and more. Thanks to dedicated volunteer groups like these for making Summer special!

We all require moments of enrichment in our lives. That doesn't change just because someone is experiencing homelessness; we still need care for our bodies, minds, and souls. Which is why each week our schedule is packed with an array of enrichment activities and classes at True Worth Place for our guests to explore. Support groups, art classes, book club, meditation, games, and more allow for moments of levity and self discovery. We are grateful to our staff, partners, and donors who make these opportunities possible!

UpSpire was created to provide reliable employment for individuals experiencing homelessness, lowering the barriers to employment and creating an income stream. While employees can stay with UpSpire indefinitely, many end up moving forward in their careers with other employers. We love seeing old UpSpire employees like Jeff succeed!

"UpSpire was there when Jeff experienced a time of homelessness and was searching for a new start – he learned about the program through a local homeless outreach service.
Jeff began as an UpSpire day laborer and was recognized as such a good worker that he was led to LAUNCH when TRWD’s initiative was introduced.
“I had worked for UpSpire for a little over a year, and during that time, they said I was one of the best workers they’d ever had and that I worked circles around people half my age,” he recalls.
Now Jeff is working on TRWD’s Trinity River floodway operations and will start a construction safety course at TCC in early 2024."
