Time for a designer spotlight! We are very excited to welcome David Lanza to Hip Pocket this season. You probably recognize his sound design, because he has worked all over DFW, as well as nationwide, for theatres such as Kids Who Care, Amphibian Stage Productions, Jubilee Theatre, Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts, Dallas Theater Center, Tarrant County College, Texas Ballet Theater, Fort Worth Community Arts Center, and many others.
Q - How would you describe the style of Big Love?
A - “Big Love” lives in this very interesting place that at some times feels very grounded and realistic, and at others feels over the top and almost dreamlike. Meanwhile it is dealing with so many raw human emotions and ideas in an almost primal form.
Q - What inspiration have you drawn from with your design for this show?
A - From the beginning, this show almost felt to me like an opera, in the sense that so many moments seemed so grand and larger-than-life. I wanted to make big bold choices that would match the high octane script. I also enjoyed that early on, director Emily Scott Banks and myself decided that musically this show didn’t need to belong to one specific world. The theatricality of the play allowed us to jump around to whatever felt right for the moment without being locked in to one singular style.
Q - What should audiences expect from Big Love ?
A - To be surprised, challenged, and entertained underneath a beautiful sky!
Q - Tell us a bit about the kind of design work you do.
A - Plays like “Big Love” are right up my alley, but I also enjoy designing for musicals, events, visual media, physical sound systems, and more! I’ve designed locally in DFW for about 15 years for a wide variety of theaters and companies, as well as nationally for companies such as Alfalfa New York, and GFour Productions.Additionally I’ve been dipping my toes into the world of composing and music production in order to expand the capabilities of my sound design. Some of that work can be heard on my soundcloud at https://soundcloud.com/david-lanza-sound-design
