• CDC Updates:
o Don’t Delay. Test Soon and Treat Early
 If you test positive for COVID-19 and have one or more health conditions (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/need-extra-precautions/people-with-medical-conditions.html) that increase your risk of becoming very sick, treatment may be available.
 Contact a health professional right away after a positive test to determine if you may be eligible, even if your symptoms are mild right now. Don’t delay: Treatment must be started within the first few days to be effective.
 Treatments used for COVID-19 should be prescribed by your healthcare provider. People have been seriously harmed and even died (https://emergency.cdc.gov/han/2020/han00431.asp) after taking products not approved for use to treat or prevent COVID-19, even products approved or prescribed for other uses. Talk to your healthcare provider about what option may be best for you.

• Frequently Asked Questions from Maryland Department of Health:
o What is the $2 Million VaxCash 2.0 Promotion and how do I qualify to win?
To encourage more Marylanders to get their COVID-19 booster shots, Gov. Larry Hogan launched the $2 Million VaxCash 2.0 Promotion (https://governor.maryland.gov/2022/02/08/governor-hogan-announces-new-booster-action-plan-2-million-vaxcash-2-0-promotion-for-boosted-marylanders/). A total of 12 Marylanders will win cash prizes in drawings to be held each Tuesday from Feb. 15 through May 3.

To be eligible, you must be a Maryland resident, at least 18 years old, and you must have received an initial dose and booster dose of a COVID-19 vaccine at non-Federal facilities in Maryland. Residents vaccinated at U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs locations in Maryland are eligible for the promotion. Click here (https://www.mdlottery.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/2-Million-VaxCash-2.0-Promotion-Drawing-Rules.pdf) for complete contest rules.

o How well do the current COVID-19 booster shots work against the Omicron variant?

COVID-19 vaccines are still the best way to protect yourself from COVID-19 and reduce the likelihood of new variants emerging. This includes primary series, booster shots and additional doses for those who need them. The current vaccines are expected to protect against severe illness, hospitalizations, and deaths due to the Omicron variant. However, some infections in people who are vaccinated may still occur. People who are up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines and get COVID-19, are less likely to develop serious illness than those who are unvaccinated.

• COVID-19 Testing:
o On Nov. 24, Governor Hogan announced that the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) will make 500,000 Abbott BinaxNOW Ag At-Home COVID-19 (https://www.abbott.com/BinaxNOW-Tests-NAVICA-App.html) test kits available through a new program being launched statewide. Each kit contains two COVID-19 tests that are approved to be used by one person, and the tests are to be used at least 36 hours apart and within three days of each other. The tests are self-administered, and results are available in 15 minutes.
o In collaboration with Frederick County Public Libraries (FCPL), Frederick County Health Department (FCHD) offered limited free Abbott BinaxNOW Antigen At-Home COVID-19 test kits to help people prevent the spread of COVID-19.
o Kits were distributed this morning, and locations are out of test kits. The Testing website (https://health.frederickcountymd.gov/633/10111/How-To-Get-Tested) and social media (https://www.facebook.com/fchealthdept) will be updated when we are able to offer them again. Please check your local pharmacy for other FDA approved self-test kits (https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19-emergency-use-authorizations-medical-devices/in-vitro-diagnostics-euas-antigen-diagnostic-tests-sars-cov-2).
o Other testing options can be found at covidtest.maryland.gov (http://covidtest.maryland.gov/).

• Update about Omicron Variant:
o Following warnings by the World Health Organization that the COVID-19 Omicron variant poses a high risk of infection surges across the globe and the first confirmed U.S. case in California, yesterday Governor Larry Hogan detailed (https://governor.maryland.gov/2021/12/01/governor-hogan-urges-booster-shots-outlines-marylands-preparedness-efforts-for-covid-19-omicron-variant/) Maryland’s preparedness efforts and continued to urge all eligible Marylanders to get a booster shot as soon as possible.
o Omicron has mutations that make it different from Delta and other known variants. These mutations may make omicron spread more easily or evade some immune protection from infections or vaccines, but not enough is known yet. See CDC’s statement about Omicron (https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2021/s1201-omicron-variant.html) and CDC’s page about variants (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/variants/variant.html) for more information.
o As the State of Maryland begins to see the anticipated seasonal uptick in some key health metrics and data showing waning immunity after six months, all Marylanders age 18 and older are urged to get a booster shot for additional protection against the virus.
o PCR testing remains widely available at more than 300 locations across Maryland. All Marylanders who feel sick or who are returning from travel are encouraged to get tested. To find the nearest testing location, visit covidtest.maryland.gov (https://coronavirus.maryland.gov/pages/symptoms-testing).
