You won't want to miss the return of Palaver Strings to Meetinghouse Arts! This time, the whole ensemble will join us to present Dancing Home, celebrating social dance as a meeting place for tradition and innovation, and a vehicle for building resilience, joy, and trust. At the heart of this program is the world premiere of ḥawwāsh by Kareem Roustom. Inspired by the ḥawwāsh, or lead dancer of a traditional dabke dance, this piece allows any musician to lead the ensemble at any given moment, sharing fluid leadership through physical and sonic cues. This program also features Palaver’s arrangement of Bartok’s Romanian Dances, original fiddle tunes by Palaver violinist Maya French, and Kinan Azmeh’s Syrian Dances, commissioned by Palaver in 2022.

Friday, September 27th at 7:00 PM. Get your tickets now, as this will sell out! https://buff.ly/3Mz8Pi6

Summer Music in the Parks now! 12-3pm in Freeport's Memorial Park.

A short clip from John Schindler.

JOHN SCHINDLER was influenced early on by that town’s rhythm and blues and his Oklahoma mother’s singing. This funky start was drastically tempered by a nine-year stint in a Catholic seminary where silence and Gregorian chant were his daily bread.

After leaving the brotherhood, and armed only with his vow of poverty, John moved to New England and pursued the path of an itinerant musician, playing in sundry bands and bad barrooms. It was during this time, he realized, that his audience could not understand Latin.

John and all three musicians playing at today's concert teach at 317 Main Community Music Center in Yarmouth, ME.
