Welcome to our new residents C/O 2028!

Bhavi Vohra, MD, originally from Santa Clara, California, took what she calls a non-traditional path to becoming a physician. After working nearly three years in the bio-tech industry, she went back to school in search of more fulfillment. She earned a master’s in medical science, followed by a medical degree. Dr. Vohra considered becoming a pediatrician because of positive experiences as a child with her own pediatrician. However, clinical rotations during her third year in medical school solidified her future. It was then she realized she wanted to be in the operating room and to work with women.

“I learned that topics such as reproductive health, sexual education, family planning, pregnancy, prolapse, or any conversation around female ge***al organs have been a taboo topic, especially in certain cultures,” said Dr. Vohra. “I wanted to learn about and be able to openly speak to women about these issues.”

Dr. Vohra will be among the more than 100 residents and fellows graduating from UCSF Fresno this year. She is completing residency training at UCSF Fresno in OB-GYN and will stay in Fresno to care for patients at Kaiser Permanente Fresno Medical Center.

We’re so excited to welcome FIVE new interns to the UCSF Fresno OB GYN team! We can’t wait to meet you!

We’ll see you this Sunday, January 14 from 2-4 for our monthly meeting!

Our special guest this month is trauma surgeon Andrea Long, MD, FACS, FAWM, (she/her) who serves as the Director of Diversity & Outreach at , the Co-Chair of the UCSF LGBTQ+ Committee, along with her role as a surgeon and Associate Clinical Professor.

Dr. Long will be sharing with us how and why she works to improve education for physicians right here in Fresno around culturally competent care of LGBTQ+ folks, especially for trans and non-binary community members. Come and learn how dedicated medical professionals are making Fresno a healthier, more affirming place for our community!

We meet at 2pm at the Wesley United Methodist Church. Dr Long will be featured from 2-3, and then we’ll have a brief break. From 3-4 we’ll have peer support and discussion, and this month we’ll be trying something new, breaking up into two groups: one for families of trans folk, and one for general LGBTQ+ support.

Fresno Providers & Birth Workers: Become a Voice for Black Birth Justice

Calling the Fresno community to learn about state/local maternal and infant health policies and the Fresno Voices for Birth Justice campaign.

Join the UCSF Preterm Birth Initiative for an online fireside chat with hospital leaders, maternal and child health providers, and community champions in Fresno. We will discuss policies on the statewide and local level that support Black maternal and child health, and how providers and birth workers can utilize these resources. Attendees will also learn about our Fresno Voices for Birth Justice campaign, and how providers and birth workers can join the chorus for Black birth justice.

If you are a community college student interested in eventually attending medical school, take a look at the California Medicine Scholars Program (CMSP). CMSP provides resources and support that will help you on your path from community college to medical school and beyond.
Students accepted to be California Medicine Scholars receive priority enrollment, advising, mentoring, and other resources and opportunities to prepare them to apply to and complete medical school.

CMSP hopes to address California’s health disparities by increasing the number of physicians from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine who will ultimately practice in underserved communities. Currently, the program is in four regions of the state, each headed by a school of medicine: the UC Davis School of Medicine, the UC Riverside School of Medicine, the UC San Diego School of Medicine, and the UCSF School of Medicine - Fresno.
