Motobu Chōki (1870-1944), one of Ryūkyū's kumite experts, said, “Technically, there is no one better than Mabuni Kenwa.”

He was known to public simply as "Mabuni the technician". Mabuni's outstanding dedication attracted both sincere and reluctant respect.
