Kids Count in Alachua County is a non-profit after-school program that provides literacy tutoring Poverty has a dramatic effect on a child’s success in school.
On average, 65% of high school students in Alachua County graduate on time in four years, and less than 50% of Alachua County high school students from low-income homes graduate on time. This is obvious in the high school graduation statistics, but how does it affect the elementary school students that Kids Count serves? 9 days until we kick off our fundraiser! Our students LOVE getting to go on community field trips. Some of their favorite ones this year have been going to .hub to learn about composting and the environment and going to the planetarium to learn about the scientific process and planets!

The Captain Program helps to empower our older students and provide them with leadership opportunities while modeling good behaviors for their peers. They also get to work on and plan special events like monthly attendance parties, donor appreciation projects, and even curriculum development. An exciting project they are working on this year is the Kids Count Yearbook!

Yesterday, our kiddos celebrated the season of love by making Valentine’s Day cards and sending each other Valentines, showing their friends and teachers just how much they’re appreciated and loved! 💌💓

Ensuring higher literacy rates is a cornerstone of Kids Count, and we couldn’t accomplish this without the help of so many amazing volunteers! Two days a week, we provide one on one homework and literacy tutoring. Plus, students get a chance to build relationships with their tutors and create lasting bonds!
Thank you to the for visiting our Faith Mission site last month and demonstrating how different lines can create art. The kiddos loved working with the wikki stix to create their own masterpieces, too! Afterwards, our staff led an activity showcasing how layering tissue paper can create a stained glass effect!

At Kids Count we seek to empower our students to never back down from a challenge and to chase their dreams of being leaders in our community. All funds donated to Kids Count through the second annual Tom Petty Day will be used to purchase books, and literacy supplies, and to fund field trips that provide our 70 amazing students with new perspectives of Gainesville.
