The 2024 Basic Skills Boot Camp included training in a variety of skills needed in a clinical setting including airway management and anesthesia maintenance, donning and doffing of personal protective equipment, perioperative medicine, and spinal anesthesia.

The sixth annual Multidisciplinary Critical Care Medicine Boot Camp was held in early August. Eighteen fellows from the Departments of Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Neurology, and Surgery, along with thirteen anesthesiology residents as part of Resident Academic Days, came together to learn the ins and outs of critical care medicine at UF Health. Critical care medicine touches a number of departments in the University of Florida College of Medicine and our anesthesiology critical care team works closely with colleagues in these other areas to produce a comprehensive Critical Care Medicine Fellowship. 🔸🩺🔹

We were honored to take part in the 4th annual Women in Medicine and Science Outreach Event, hosted by the Women in Medicine and Science Advisory Board and the Medi-Gators program. Thanks to Maggie Green, CAA, who spearheaded our department's participation in the event and helped give these young ladies an exciting, hands-on experience with medical careers.

“We are very lucky to have the resources available to provide these opportunities to people who may not otherwise have exposure to careers in medicine," said Green. "I am very honored to have been invited to be active with Medi-Gators.”

Congratulations to Christoph Seubert, M.D., Ph.D., DABNM, FASA, Cole Dooley, M.D., Anna Woods, R.N., and Cyndi Garvan, Ph.D, for their recent co-authorship of an article in the Journal of Clinical Medicine! 🐊📙📘🐊

: We were excited to congratulate Terrie Vasilopoulos, associate professor of anesthesiology and orthopaedic & sports medicine, on receiving a faculty enhancement opportunity to fund registration for a workshop series through the American Association of Medical Colleges!

Dr. Vasilopoulos will use the funding to attend a series of AAMC workshops for the purpose of completing its Medical Education Research Certificate program. The funding will also allow her to attend the 2024 AAMC Learn, Serve, Lead conference, where she will be able to network with other faculty working in medical education as well as present her own work.

We’re pleased to welcome Charlie Slowey, MB, B*h, BAO, to the department this month. 🐊🐊

Dr. Slowey has joined us as an assistant professor in the Divisions of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine. He received his medical degree from University College Cork, Ireland, where he graduated with honors. He then completed his anesthesiology residency, as well as a critical care medicine fellowship and cardiothoracic anesthesia fellowship, at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

In his spare time, Dr. Slowey enjoys fantasy novels, home baking, and playing squash. He also used to be an avid rugby player and has represented his country in international competitions.
