Join us for a reading and conversation with Olive Senior on Monday, February 8 at 4:00PM in the Judaica Suite (Smathers Library 2nd floor in Special Collections Grand Reading Room).
Olive Senior will read from her poetry and fiction and discuss Dying to Better Themselves: West Indians and the Building of the Panama Canal, her recent prizewinning book which exposes a little known side of a monumental story.
Author of over 16 books, Olive Senior is one of the most prominent contemporary Caribbean writers, having won prominent prizes for her fiction, poetry and non-fiction. Senior has worked internationally as a creative writing teacher and lecturer on Caribbean literature and culture. She is on the faculty of the Humber School for Writers, Toronto, and has taught in
the writing programs at University of Toronto, St Lawrence University, Barnard College and Columbia University.

Before the actual transfer of the Panama Canal from the United States to Panama on December 31, 1999, Panamanian President Mireya Moscoso, U.S. President Jimmy Carter, King Juan Carlos I of Spain, and other heads of state participated in a symbolic transfer ceremony on December 14, 1999.

Did you race in the Ocean to Ocean Cayuco Race between 1954 to 1963? Do you recognize anyone in these photos? Frank Townsend is documenting the early years of the race, and would appreciate your help and input. If you're at the PCS Reunion this weekend, drop by the Museum Collection Room to visit with Frank, view the photos and share your information.
