Help Ensure Full Funding for MCPS Schools
We need your voice and presence at the upcoming Montgomery County Council Budget Hearing on May 12 at 9:30 am. This is a critical moment for our school system and community, as the council will determine which projects and services are deemed a high priority and which are not. What will likely be funded and what will not.
By attending the County Council Budget Hearing, your presence will strongly show all council members that fully funding our schools is the right choice. Being there will send the council a clear message that our community values an excellent education for all students and that they should consider all students a high priority.
If you cannot attend, you can fill out this petition: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfEF__O1HCj67HOqgZghQziPCoIfqC9jgE1MrbghmFvwb1a-Q/viewform

Exciting news🐻😁
We would like to highlight a young star, Zaila Avant-Garde. Now she’s not old enough to go to college yet, but Zaila is first African-American to win the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee as a 13 year old. Her final winning word was Murraya. Zaila has many talents: she is one of the top basketball players in her age group and as a result of her talent, she holds three Guiness book world records for juggling…not tennis balls but basketballs!! In 2019, she broke the record for the most bounce juggles with three basketballs in one minute. 231 was her number! On the same day, she broke another record with four basketballs – 307 bounces in 30 seconds. She is very focused, studies hard, and sets goals for herself. Zaila is going to be a great athletic and academic star in the future. Happy Black History Month!
What is Black History Month? In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who is known as the Father of Black History, established “Negro History Week.” Dr. Woodson wanted to celebrate Black History in America which was not taught or shared frequently with American history. He focused on the second week of February because it included the birthdays of two American symbols of freedom: Abraham Lincoln, 18th US president and Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist, social reformer, and former slave. In 1986, President Reagan created a Presidential Proclamation that stated, “the foremost purpose of Black History Month is to make all Americans aware of this struggle for freedom and equal opportunity.” thereby establishing Black History Month celebrations every year in February. Happy Black History Month!
