Today we celebrate Juneteenth, a day that has special significance here in Galveston! Juneteenth represents the end of slavery in the United States, when on June 19th, 1865, troops marched down to Galveston carrying the news of the Emancipation Proclamation and ensuring that all people who were once enslaved were now free. On the first Juneteenth, US General Gordon Granger proclaimed freedom, saying, “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with the proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

This month is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month.
Every 68 seconds, someone in America is sexually assaulted. In 80% of cases, the assaulter is known by the person who is assaulted. In this post, we will talk about some ways to increase your personal safety.
Some general safety tips: Be alert and aware of your surroundings. Always have a plan B, whether that is another way home, a number to call if your phone dies, etc. Be careful about posting your location. Know your right to say “no” if someone touches your body in a way that you do not like.
If you attend a party or a large social gathering, there are a few things you can do to be more safe: Attend with friends who will look out for each other. Do not leave a drink unattended and do not take a drink from someone you don’t know & trust because drugs that are odorless, colorless, and tasteless can be slipped into your drink. Trust your instincts.
The National Sexual Assault Hotline is 800-656-4673. This number can help provide support, information, advice, or even a referral to other services. Remember, it is never a sexual assault victim’s fault.

☑️Besides ni****ne, v**es/e-ci******es contain other potentially toxic chemicals.
☑️Vaping has been associated with cough and respiratory symptoms, and in rare cases, a more severe and even life-threatening disease called EVALI (e-cigarette or va**ng product use-associated lung injury).
If you v**e, and want to quit, your doctor or healthcare provider can help you create a plan that is best for you!
