Spencer J. Roemer Arboretum
The Spencer J. Roemer Arboretum is a 20-acre natural area on the south end of the SUNY Geneseo campus. The land comprising the Spencer J. Spencer J.
Roemer Arboretum was owned by the Wadsworth family of Geneseo since 1790. It was used as pasture until the 1960s, when it became part of the SUNY Geneseo campus. Roemer served as Director of Admissions from 1964 to 1977 and continued to be active in campus life after retirement, including service on the Geneseo Campus Environmental Improvement Program Committee. If you plant it, they will come. In the Arboretum, we have planted four individuals of northern spicebush (Lindera benzoin), a native shrub found in the understory of eastern forests. It is the main host plant of the specialist herbivore, the spicebush swallowtail. At least one of these butterflies located at least one of our plants and laid eggs which developed into fantastically interesting caterpillars this August through September. Check out these photos!
Arboretum student volunteers recently enjoyed a beautiful fall morning purchasing native plants at Amanda's Native Garden Perennial Nursery to fill in some spaces in the Arboretum's gardens. These plants should have a head start for the next growing season!
Last month the Genesee County Master Gardeners visited the Roemer Arboretum to tour our native gardens. Here are some photos of the gardens over the summer, and some of our insect visitors.
Sustainability & Arboretum intern Katelyn Adis checks on some past plantings in the Arboretum woods. These trees and shrubs are planted as bare-root seedlings in student volunteer events on Earth Day and Arbor Day. Inevitably a lot don't make it, but there are some impressive successes! These restoration plantings are important for increasing the diversity of native shrubs and trees. We are also anticipating the loss of tree cover as white ash succumbs to the invasive emerald ash borer.
