A soldier posing with "Battling Lizzie" at Camp C**t on the Gettysburg battlefield 1918. Camp C**t was the U.S. Tank Corps training camp during WWI. It was located on the Gettysburg battlefield. They used "mock tanks" like this one made of plywood on trucks. At the very end of WWI Camp C**t finally was allotted 2 Renault Tanks. Camp C**t was commanded by then Captain Dwight D. Eisenhower. Today is the day that lives as the "Day of Infamy" December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor. My Story for today starts on that day, I had a man stop in the restaurant, Hunt's Battlefield Fries and Cafe' and he ate, but he also brought one one my many Mitiary hats that I have for sale. He tells me the store of why he is buying the hat, His Grandfather was a U.S Navy sailor and his Grandfather was killed on board the USS Oklahoma BB- 37 and he wanted to buy the hat and wear it, in Honor of his Grandfather. So this pass summer of 2023 that man stops back in the restaurant to eat and he share's his store with me what happen to him after he bought that USS Oklahoma's hat. He tells me that the U.S.Navy calls him up and they need a DNA sample from him, His Grandfather was buried in a mass grave in Hawaii and they the Navy are going to dig up the remains of all the boys that are buried their so they can try to Identify them. So he provides a DNA sample. A few months later he gets a call from someone at the Navy and says they have Identified his Grandfather. They did the identification some where in the midwest. The Navy just needs to know where he wants his Grandfather reburied at. He tells them to reburied his Grandfather at the National Cemetery, "The Punch Bowl" in Hawaii but he ask them to call him went they are flying his Grandfather back to Hawaii as he wants to acompany his Grandfather on the flight. So he wears the the USS Oklahoma BB-37 hat he bought from me, all the way back to Hawaii and he also wears the hat at the service to rebury his Grandfather who died on December 7, 1941 on board the USS OKLAHOMA BB-37. His granfathers name was Oliver Kenneth Burger, https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/77280219/oliver-kenneth-burger and he was incharge of all the Boiler's on the USS Oklahoma. Thanks to all the men and women that fought and died on Dec 7, 1941 https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/238446422/oliver-kenneth-burger

The Shaker-style “Round Barn,” built by the Sheely family in 1914, is one of Adams County’s most iconic architectural landmarks. Located in Biglerville, the barn is about 90 feet in diameter and could hold up to 90 head of horses or cattle. Today, the barn is a popular market, event venue, and tourist attraction called the Historic Round Barn & Farm Market.

On this day in 1875...Eddie Plank was born.

Edward S. Plank, also known as "Gettysburg Eddie," was born and raised right here in Adams County. After playing on several local town teams and attracting notice as a gifted pitcher, he was recruited by Gettysburg College and admitted to the Gettysburg Academy. While at the college, he attracted the Philadelphia Athletics who signed him to a contract. Under Manager Connie Mack, Plank proved to be a model of consistency during his professional career, eventually becoming the first left-handed pitcher to win 200 games and then 300 games. He was also a part of three World Series teams during his time in Philadelphia. His career W-L record is 326-194.

In 1946, Plank was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY by the Veterans Committee. Unfortunately, he never knew about his induction because he passed away at the age of 50 in 1926. Plank is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg.

Very cool postwar shot of the Wagon Hotel/Battlefield Hotel, which sat at the intersection of Baltimore St. and the Emmitsburg Road in Gettysburg (where the mini-mart now stands across from the 1863 Inn). Note the sign marking the "outerpost" of Union skirmishers/sharpshooters in town, as well as some chill dudes, dogs, rifle, open windows, closed shutters and more! This structure I think burned in largd part before the turn of the century then got larger and burned again in the 1940s. (as soon as I posted this, I received a flurry of comments and images from my buddy Tim Smith, who provides several images in the comments from his local crap file at the Adams County Historical Society at Gettysburg!)

“But alas! How transitory are all human affairs! How fleeting are riches! How brittle the invisible thread on which all early comforts are suspended! Peace in a moment can take an immeasurable flight…. In one fatal day, our prospects were all blasted; and death, by cruel hands, inflicted upon almost the whole of my family.” - Mary Jemison

Recently, we posted about Mary Jemison, a young girl who was kidnapped in 1758 in Buchanan Valley, west of Gettysburg. The abduction led to the murder of her parents and several of her siblings. Today, we're excited to give a sneak preview of one of the items that will be featured in our new museum, Gettysburg Beyond the Battle, coming in spring 2023. It seems fitting that this booklet will be part of our Mary Jemison exhibit as the booklet will be 100 years old next year.

Get ready to go "beyond the battle" with us and learn more about Mary's incredible story of tragedy and survival!
