Tuesday's Headshot Blitz was in Downtown Phoenix. I managed to fit a few extra sessions in before shooting an exciting groundbreaking event right down the street. Downtown is an ever changing landscape, and it's always a fun spot to shoot pictures!

Here's a great idea for changing up your family photos this year. Color Battle sessions are available only as GOLD Sessions. The first 10-15 minutes we take just posed portraits, followed by 10-15 minutes of structured color photos, and ending with 10 minutes of color battle chaos. I LOVE these photos, and can't wait to have older kiddos to do this with. I recommend these sessions for ages 6+. The powder is biodegradable, and washes out of most clothing. It takes a few washes to come out of blonde, white, and gray hair.

Do you want something different for your family portraits? Consider a day trip! The Glamis Dunes of Imperial, CA, are about a 3.5 hour drive from Phoenix, 4 hours from Chandler/Gilbert. Sunset is around 4:30pm in the late fall and early winter, so you can be home by bedtime!

Papago Park is my last location highlight of the week. This is a popular spot for family portraits, so it's best to book during the week, early in the season, or early in the morning to avoid crowds.

Today's highlighted location is the Mesa Arts Center. I prefer to shoot here in the morning and evening when the sun is low to avoid light bouncing off all the shiny surfaces.

Today I'm featuring my new FAVORITE outdoor location, Canyon Lake.
I've shot at various spots on the lake over the last 10 years, at all times of the day. Morning light is softer, afternoon light will bounce hard off the water, and evening light turns everything into lovely soft pastels

Veteran's Oasis is a beautiful park located on Chandler Heights between ValVista and Lindsay. It's a public park, and can get crowded during portrait season, but it's local and free.
I can make a session here work at any time of the day, but golden hour is always best! Book within 1 hour of sunrise or sunset for prime lighting.

Today's highlighted location is the Tempe Center for the Arts. I love this location for the blue mirrored backdrop, the water feature, and Tempe Town Lake. The building itself features 3 distinct backdrops, and a group of prickly pear cactus on the west side for a desert touch.
This is a good location all day, but I prefer sunrise/sunset for the softer light. This year I'll be offering pre-scheduled evening minis at TCA, and Gold sessions throughout the season.

In the meantime, join me as I highlight some of my favorite locations. Today I am starting with the Boyce-Thompson Arboretum.
This gorgeous location is located about 45 minutes outside of the East Valley, along the US60 towards Globe. The Arboretum sits against a small mountain just far enough outside of Phoenix to have cooler weather all year long, and the care of the gardeners keeps it green and lush no matter the season.
Entrance is $25 for adults, $10 for children 5-12, free for kiddos under 5. I recommend spending a half day exploring or hiking after your session

I bring the props, and split my time between these staged images with garlands and props, and cute candid photos of your baby playing on the floor. It's so much fun to see the progression of laying flat, to tummy time, to sitting up or crawling!

Milestones can be shot every month, once a quarter, or just on special occasions.

We do this every month with my baby. Now that she's almost 6 months old, I have a collection that showcases her growth, with cute monthly themes to remind me what time of year she hit each stage.

Sunday was Zuko's last day on earth.
13 years ago, I was living in Omaha and decided that I wanted a pet to keep me company in my apartment. After much research, I decided dogs were too much work and required too much attention, fish were too boring (and too much work), and I didn't like rodents. My best friend had a cat that I quite enjoyed, so I settled on a cat.
One cold October day in Omaha, Nebraska, Zuko and his sister Zoe became my cats. Zoe was the first in a string of siblings and companions for Zuko that didn't quite work out.
The reality is, I'm not really a house-pet person. I like a tidy home, without chaos. Every other cat that came into my home was chaotic, or nasty, or caused my lungs and nose to explode or seize up at regular intervals. But Zuko fit perfectly with my lifestyle, and only aggravated my allergies if I was dumb enough to touch my face after petting him. He only made a mess on my furniture if I was in extreme emotional distress, and he didn't really have furballs until recently.
Zuko loved people. He would greet anyone at the door, crawl into their lap, and demand attention. If you didn't want him around, he would happily retreat into a dark corner to nap the day away. When he was a kitten, he'd even play fetch with rolled-up socks.
When Jenna and her kids moved in with me, Zuko was a good friend to the kids. He let them crawl on him, stick their fingers in his ears, play with his tail, and trim his whiskers. He has barely given a second glance to Lily since she's been around. For a brief period when I was living with my parents in 2012, he even charmed my dad.
Cats hate water. Zuko was no exception. Even so, he used to sit by my bathtub when I spent long hours soaking away my troubles. More recently, he would curl up in my lap outside when Bryce and I sat around the fire pit. I always thought he was a very brave cat for doing those things.
Zuko has been with me through over a decade of life. Even though the last few years have been tough, as we've dealt with his diabetes, I will remember him as the loyal and fluffy companion that got me through some dark and lonely days.
Thanks for the memories, Zuzu cat.

We made macarons! It was a long process (5 hours), and we only made 21 finished cookies, but they were delicious. I recommend the Tasty recipe, which you can easily find on YouTube.
My notes for next time: Try cream of tartar in the meringue, try to avoid big air pockets in the pastry bag, tap the pan more gently, make half the suggested amount of buttercream and with half the powdered sugar.
