Did you know there are people who make fun of people for taking photographs of their food? Yep. There are lots of people who do this. They aren’t shy about it either. I don’t really get why it bugs people so much. I love taking photos of some of my meals. Here are a few reasons why:

1) I enjoy inspiring others to turn mealtime into something special
2) Often, people message me asking for the recipe or details of the restaurant and the exact dish I had, so they can give it a try too
3)There’s something special about documenting a snippet of a good meal shared for my personal photo memory bank

Sharing a meal with someone always makes me feel good! Thinking back on those mornings or evenings spent with loved ones around a table trying new dishes together, spending quality time getting to know each other better, and just being present with one another. It’s those simple, cozy times that really stick with me long after they’ve happened.

You may not like me after I admit what I’m about to tell you right now. I instantly feel a certain way when I enter a home I haven’t been to before. It took me years to realize why some homes felt warm and inviting to me and others felt a bit boring despite the type of style the home decor was. It could be beautiful decor, the most “in” color scheme or outrageously lavish furnishings. If it was missing the key element of personal portraits throughout it, I would feel as if something was MISSING.

As a younger person I couldn’t put my finger on it. I guess I understand now that I was raised in a home FULL of photos, some in albums, and a few very large portraits strategically placed in just the right spots by my grandma. I also remember spending hours staring at portraits at my aunt’s house of my cousins and their whole family that were in antique frames of various sizes. While the adults would spend hours talking about life I would be half listening and making up my own stories about the images I saw around the home. Did my aunt have to bribe my oldest cousin to be good for that photographer? What did she bribe him with? Was it a new toy, a soda, or a double chocolate shake when they left? How come his hair was curly in the photo as a toddler but nowadays it’s not curly at all?

The truth is, whenever I visit a new home, I’m eager to gaze at portraits to see MORE of who those people value most and how they incorporate all types of art in their home decor. I know you might be thinking, ‘That makes sense, you’re a PHOTOGRAPHER after all.’ However, this fascination with portraits started around 6 or 7 years old, way before I even became an amateur photographer. In my opinion, a home that looks like something out of a magazine can be aesthetically pleasing, but without a few personal portraits, it lacks the ability to fully captivate someone like me. I mean ANY personal touches fascinate me. It doesn’t have to be photos.

It feels like I win the lottery every time I get to photograph another innocent new baby. I get giddy about it and time feels like it freezes. It doesn’t matter how long it takes to get some portraits the parents will gush over either…because I’m in heaven the entire time.

What makes you feel this happy in life and with the work you get to do, friend?

Spring has definitely sprung here in Az, and my heart is pawsitively overflowing with love! This little flower lover, Raven, is already 1 and blooming into the best office buddy a photographer could ask for. Every day is a chance to enjoy her company and inquisitive spirit over visiting exciting places and meeting new people. I need to get out and take new pics of here with the yellow and lavender blooms that are everywhere right now. 🌼

I often use the home’s interior decor as inspiration for the color palette we go with for family sessions. I do this because the purpose of taking professional photos is usually to create wall art or specialty desktop prints/gifts. People love to display art that goes well in the home. Neutral color schemes for wardrobes are great when you’re not sure what colors may work. 🖼️

And this is what a photographer means when they tell you that you don’t have to all match but you want to actually coordinate colors that compliment each other so it adds visual interest, dimension, and personality to the photos. Sometimes wearing matching outfits can appear overly uniform and lack depth. When you carefully choose complementary colors it helps to avoid the risk of outfits blending together or overwhelming the overall aesthetic of the photos. 🎨

Paying attention to tiny details makes all the difference in a newborn photoshoot! From the soft patches of hair on their shoulders to the delicate curve of their newborn cheeks, every detail tells a story worth documenting. I always struggle with deciding between color and classic black and white portraits too. Fortunately parents always get BOTH so they only have to struggle with which type they’re going to put on their walls. I’ve photographed soooooooooo many boys in a row but I have a girl visiting the studio very soon and I can’t wait for a bit of lace and feminine touches.

For years I’ve taken maternity photos and for years I’ve run into people who aren’t sure they want them and many that regret not having taken any. Maternity photos are all about preserving a feeling. A feeling that doesn’t happen often. It’s understandable why some may hesitate, but trust me, those memories are worth it. Someday, you’ll want to look back and remember the anticipation, the excitement, and the love that filled your heart at this very unique time of life.

Truth be told…I’ve never met anyone who said they regret having these types of portraits of themselves and I think most children find it fascinating to see how their momma looked when they were growing inside of them too. 💗

Do you feel like you’re having a hard time keeping up with the demands of motherhood? If you’re like I was when my kids were young, I wanted to keep up with housework, my business, the PTA obligations I had, and countless other things. What I wish is that I had SLOWED WAY DOWN and spent more time in play and savor mode, took more videos and photos, and led my children into leaning into their curiosity more. In the midst of the chaos, it’s easy to overlook the beauty of these precious years spent with our children. But it’s essential to slow down and savor the moments because they are going to be gone before you know it. 😩

Motherhood isn’t just a series of tasks to be completed...it’s a journey filled with love, learning and growth. Despite the rush of it all, we all need to take a little time to be present and deliberate in our interactions. Afterall, our kids deserve it. 💯
