Physics teachers! You haven't taken Computational Modeling in Physics First with Bootstrap?!!! Oh my gosh! Now's your chance!
It's FREE!
You just need to get yourself there. Jane Jackson at ASU can give you suggestions about finding funding for travel. [email protected]

I know it says apply by April 15th, but there are a few seats left! This is your chance!
K12 Programs -Computational Modeling in Physics First Computational Modeling in Physics First
All certified AZ K-12 teachers: apply NOW for a $2,000 professional development (PD) scholarship! Teachers have at least one year to use the $2000.
Apply at https://www.azed.gov/titlei/pd-pilot-program
Professional development must support a certificated teacher in gaining additional credentials (e.g., qualify to teach dual enrollment physics or chemistry) and/or certifications in math, a science subject, technology, engineering or CTE.
Don't delay! Teachers can re-apply once a year, for another $2000. (This is possibly the LAST year of the program. We asked AZ legislators to make the program permanent, and they are trying.)
Download feedback from 7 teachers who used their $2000 scholarship from 2017: see
http://modeling.asu.edu/AZ/$2000scholarshipsFeedback2019.pdf
-----------------------
-- I gladly advise teachers on high quality PD to add physics or chemistry certification, and/or qualify to teach dual enrollment. Call me at 480-314-1522, or [email protected] . See flier of ASU this summer (2022) PD courses:http://modeling.asu.edu/MNS/ASU-ModlWrkshps2022.pdf
-- Some rural county school superintendents might provide $2500 stipends also! (Ask me about it.)
Suggestions on how to use $2000 scholarships for physics or chemistry:
http://modeling.asu.edu/AZ/$2000scholarships-retrainSTEM.htm
WHY THE NEED? Arizona has dire shortages of qualified, effective high school teachers in physics, math, and chemistry. This is inequitable! It's a big obstacle, preventing many students from pursuing careers in STEM.
* Only ~160 physics-certified teachers teach high school physics. That's 1 teacher for every 2000 HS students.
Only 20% of AZ high schoolers take physics: HALF the nationwide average.
* 20% of Arizona public district high schools eliminated physics after the recession of 2008.
WHY the $2000 scholarships? The "High Quality Teacher Professional Development Program" is a grassroots effort; it passed in 2017 & 2019, in the Arizona budgets. Thanks to Mike Vargas, physics teacher in Phoenix, for initiating the effort, and to 4 physics/physical science teachers (Cactus Caucus) who helped get this legislation. The Cactus Caucus will focus on grades 5 to 8 science in AZ for the next 3 years.
Welcome to Get SET for STEM! Get-SET-for-STEM_Website-6-300x225.png The Arizona Department of Education wants to help teachers "Get SET for STEM!" High School Physics Teachers! This June, take an ASU MECHANICS Modeling Instruction course at ASU - Tempe, June 6 to 24.
Leader: Jeff Steinert has led mechanics Modeling Instruction courses for 20 years. His high school, Arizona School for the Arts, is innovative. Jeff has done research that's useful in the classroom.
Co Leader: Melissa Girmscheid was PhysTEC Arizona Teacher of the Year in 2020. She led Computational Physics First Modeling Workshops several times. She teaches 9th grade physics in Tolleson Union HS District.
TIMES: MTWTh 8am to 3:30pm. F 8am to noon.
WHY TAKE IT?
* Modeling Instruction teaches students to think, to be autonomous life-long learners. It infuses 21st century skills into challenging physics content.
* Best preparation for the AZ physics certification test (NES test), teachers say.
* Even PhDs in physics laud it, for teaching them effective pedagogy.
PHS 530/PHY 480, Modeling Instruction in mechanics, is a Methods of Physics Teaching course that thoroughly addresses most aspects of high school and TYC physics teaching, including integration of teaching methods with course content as it should be done in the classroom. The course incorporates up-to-date results of physics education research, best curriculum materials, use of technology, and experience in collaborative learning and guidance. It's harmonious with AZ science standards.
