In our Preschool Steps 1.5 hour class, parent/child play time is followed by a gentle separation time where children are engaged by expert teachers in social activities and brain games like puzzles, playdough, and storytime. Play a STOP 🛑 and GO 🟢 game. Remember "red light, green light" or "freeze dance?" These help develop self-control and will help your two year old negotiate, compromise, and work out conflicts without losing their temper.

Give your child balls to kick, roll, and throw. Maybe not at you, but, hey if they hit you you can chalk that up to great hand-eye coordination! Maybe just use a soft playball...

But seriously, kicking, rolling and throwing helps with motor skills and social skills too. Don't forget balance and coordination. You will see we bring out play balls often in class and use them in many ways. Rolling them down the slide. Tossing them into the rainbow barrel. Taking turns kicking them under the play equipment.

Build a tower and then watch it tumble!

Use blocks or other safely stackable objects to build a tower together and let your toddler knock it down! Not only is it incredibly exciting and funny to watch their creation fall down, but they’ll also be working on developing their fine motor skills by using two hands together. Be creative on how you build the tower and don't forget to name to colors of the blocks a you stack them.

Make ART!

It seems simple, but it really makes for a great time together. Get out crayons and make a drawing or arrange objects from outside or some toys into a masterpiece. It doesn't have to be fancy, just be creative together. And make sure you display this awesome piece of artwork so they can see it.

Our art classes have a tactile and/or sensory component to them as it’s a wonderful experience for kiddos to not only create art using their imagination, but also while using their senses.

This is one.
Try this:
Grab a container and ask your baby to put toys or other child-safe objects in and then take them out again. As they play, use the words “in” and “out” to describe their actions.
It's fun! But little do they know they are working on developing fine motor skills by grabbing their toys and developing their communication skills by listening to directions. Not to mention vocabulary!

In class, we use toys and the rainbow barrel to show in and out. We use the parachute to put our bodies in and out of the circle. We add on under and above, around and through the tunnel, up and down the slide. What else can you add?
Yes, your ONE YEAR OLD can do it.

This is 1. 🎂
It's time for their first birthday!
(OK, these tips help for second birthdays too!)

1. Plan around naptime -- Don't plan a morning party if your baby naps in the morning or an early afternoon party if they usually sleep right after lunch. Inviting a tired baby to participate in the festivities is inviting disaster.

2. Take photos BEFORE the party begins -- BEFORE the chaos begins. You'll love the family photo before you start greeting guests and before your child becomes overwhelmed with the attention. (One from the end of the party could be funny though!)

3. Ask for help in documenting the event -- everyone has a phone, ask guests to take some photos or a video, and share them with you afterwards. You will appreciate the different viewpoints of your party and you may see some fun escapades you missed.

4. Make a birthday tradition THIS FIRST year. Is there something you can do this year, and every year for the next 18 years? We are all familiar with singing to the birthday boy while he blows out the candles or has her smash the cake with her fits, but what is unique to your family?
⭐A special plate for their birthday cake that comes out once a year?

⭐A special greeting the exact time they were born (or the +12 hours for those born in the middle of the night!).
⭐How about an early morning surprise left in their room to wake up to? (Think balloons, a small gift like a book or even a dollar for every year of their age.)

5. Finally, leave the activities, set up and clean up to us! At Gymboree Play & Music we'll create a private, personalized party experience filled with child-friendly activities. Our play floor is safe for your littlest guests and provides a perfect backdrop for your big day AND your photos.

TRY THIS:
Build a fort.

Whether you’re 12 months old, 12 years old, or, hey 32 years old...forts are FUN. Drape some blankets over your furniture, hang sheets from the ceiling, or set up pillows or cardboard boxes for a cool, creative playspace. Then, read, make noise, sing, whatever you want. It's your fort!

At Gymboree, our play equipment has forts galore! From under the bridge to a cube with scarves, and don't forget the PARACHUTE! Forts are safe spaces, a place for calm, and a place where they are in charge of their own little world. So BUILD THAT FORT!

LIttle ones LOVE music — and for good reason. Music can be fast-paced or super soothing, and kids feel this. Sing, Dance. Music helps children relax. It helps them develop socially, emotionally, and linguistically.

So play music. Find ways to incorporate both song and dance into their daily lives. Whether this means a dinner playlist or dance parties during bath time is up to you. At Gymboree, we use music in every class from gathering songs to songs with directions for activities. We even have special Music Classes for families.
