I will be returning to Romania this May 2024 with Hope 4 kids International. Last year I had a wonderful inspiring time on this trip serving the Roma Gypsy community in the surrounding villages of Oradea. These programs offer preschool and afterschool programs, school supplies, coats, shoes and other needs for success in school. As you know education is key in impacting poverty and making a better life for these young children.

For me the highlight was to work with Dawn Hoffman, one of the Hope 4 Kids' partners, who works with the special needs population in Oradea. These are children with cognitive disorders like Autism and Downs Syndrome. Given this is the work that I do, I wanted to help her ministry to this population.

I would like to ask you to help support this ministry by praying first, but also giving financially. If you would like to join us for this year's trip to Romania and be a part of all they are doing, I would strongly encourage you to join us and you can find out more about the trip at the link below. If you work in this field as a caregiver, physical therapist, speech therapist or music therapist, what a great way to share your skills but you don't need any of these skills to be a part of this trip.

Disability is not a bad word. Disabled is not a bad word.

Language evolves, and that includes the ongoing discussion about person-first and identity-first language. Some examples:

Person-first language:
- Person with a disability
- Person with autism
- Person in a wheelchair

Identity-first language:
- Disabled person
- Autistic person
- Wheelchair user

There’s not a 100% right or wrong answer for which language to use. Just like in every community, we have individual preferences for the words we use to describe ourselves and our lived experiences.

At The Mighty, we default to identity-first language, as our experience as disabled staff has shown us that disability impacts most every facet of our lives. It is part of our personhood, part of who we are. We are disabled.

However. We always defer to someone else’s choice in identity in speaking about their own lived experience. If someone chooses person-first language to describe themselves, we don’t tell them they are wrong - because they aren’t wrong. They are describing their personal experience.

If you’re unsure about which language to use for yourself, try both. See which feels more aligned with your experience, and know that it can change over time, and that’s OK.

If you’re unsure what language to use about someone else’s experience, you can always ask. We know there’s an unwritten societal rule not to, but really - it’s OK.

Some options:
- How would you like to be referred to?
- Do you identify as disabled?
- Do you use “disabled person” or “person with a disability”?
