The secret to making your hair look thicker?

Extensions.

Adding a row or two of extensions that match your length will make your hair look so voluminous! If you want to add length, that’s an option too!

“I want to add dimension to my hair, but I don’t want to bleach it.”

If this is you, we have options! While bleach is one of most popular ways to lighten hair and add dimension to dark hair, a similar effect can be achieved with high-lift color. High-lift color is a permanent hair color that lifts your natural color while depositing artificial color.

High-lift color can provide depth and dimension to your dark hair without the need for bleach, though the results may be more understated compared to using traditional lightening methods.

Is dimensional color the same thing as traditional highlights? Sort of!

While traditional highlights are a type of dimensional color, dimensional color includes a wider range of techniques and outcomes. Dimensional color aims for a more natural and versatile effect compared to the often more defined look of traditional highlights.

Traditional highlights aim to create brightness, focusing on areas where light would naturally hit, like the top layers and around the face. The result is usually a more defined, streaky look.

Dimensional color focuses on creating a more natural, multi-tonal effect with a blend of different shades. The end result is a more blended, subtle look.

Is it better to highlight my gray hair or to color it? 👩🏽‍🦳

This depends on your maintenance preference and your natural hair color!

For those with lighter hair color - think blonde - and who want to go longer between appointments, highlighting is the best option. You can schedule your appointments every 6-12 weeks and the highlights will blend your gray hair rather than cover it.

For those with darker hair color - think medium brown & darker - and who are comfortable being in the salon regularly, coloring to cover your grays is better for you! You can schedule your appointments every 4-8 weeks depending on how quickly your hair grows.

Is balayage out of style? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Not yet! Balayage is still a top trending color in 2024. Balayage is a color application technique, and can be a great way to achieve a lived-in look. Whatever your end goal may be, send me your inspo pics so I can determine which technique I’ll use to get you to your ultimate goal! 💁🏼‍♀️

⏳ How long does dimensional color last? ⏳

The toner or gloss that keeps your hair toned lasts about 20 shampoos (with professional shampoo) 🧴

Your highlights will last until you want them brought up! This means you can come in as soon as 6 weeks or hold off as long as 12 months. We can discuss your maintenance plan during the consultation portion of your appointment!

Wanting to achieve a lived-in blonde look? 👱🏻‍♀️

A custom blonding session means exactly what it sounds like - CUSTOM. Your blonde can go all the way to the scalp or we can leave a bit of a root. With any lived-in blonde look, the goal is to be able to go longer between blonding appointments.

This placement will allow a soft grow out so there is no harsh line of demarcation, which means the client chooses how often to be in the salon! 💇🏼‍♀️

⛔️Who is not the best candidate for hair extensions?⛔️

Hair extensions may not be suitable for people with certain conditions or circumstances, such as:

💔 Damaged Hair: If someone’s hair is severely damaged or fragile, adding extensions could further stress the hair and worsen its condition. If your hair/scalp is not strong enough for extensions at the time of your consultation, I will not install them for you. We can always schedule another consultation for a future date!

🧑🏽 Very Short Hair: Hair extensions typically require a certain length of natural hair to securely attach them. If someone has very short hair, it may be difficult to blend the extensions seamlessly. I typically require at least 4 inches of natural hair to install extensions.

💪🏼 Active Lifestyles: Those who engage in activities that involve a lot of sweating or frequent exposure to water may find it challenging to maintain hair extensions, as they may need more frequent washing and styling. We can discuss hair care at your consultation!

🏥 Medical Conditions: People undergoing certain medical treatments or taking medications that affect hair growth or health may need to consult with a healthcare professional before getting hair extensions. Weight-loss surgery recovery and the post-partum period both typically see a lot of hair loss, and neither is a good time to get hair extensions. We can talk more if you have specific questions!

💵 Budget Constraints: Hair extensions can be expensive to install and maintain, so individuals with tight budgets may find them financially impractical. It’s essential to consult with a professional hairstylist to determine if hair extensions are suitable for your hair type, condition, and lifestyle.

➕ How can I make my hair look thicker? ➕

Adding volume to you hair can be achieved through a few different methods: 

🪡 Hair Extensions: 
Sewn-in wefts can add instant volume and thickness to your hair. I personally wear extensions that match my length for added volume and I love them! My hair looks thicker and I feel more confident with the added volume. If you’re interested in volume, but not length, we can add extensions without extending the length of your hair! Ask me about a consultation at your next appointment.

🧴 Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner:
Products labeled as “volumizing” or “thickening” typically contain ingredients that can help add volume to your hair, such as proteins, polymers, and vitamins. If you aren’t sure which one is right for you, ask me at your next appointment! I have a list of favorites that I’m happy to recommend!

💨 Blow-Drying Techniques: 
When blow-drying your hair, use a round brush to lift the roots as you dry. Focus the blow-dryer on the roots and use a cool shot at the end to set the volume. Don’t forget your heat protectant!

☂️ Healthy Hair Care:
Keep your hair healthy by using nourishing hair masks, avoiding heat styling tools too often, and protecting your hair from environmental damage.

💭 Should I ask for a balayage or lived-in highlights? What’s the difference?

👱🏼‍♀️ Traditional balayage & lived-in highlights are both popular, but they have some different in the final look they achieve.

☀️ Balayage creates a natural, sun-kissed effect with softer, more gradual transitions between the colored and natural hair. The overall result is typically softer and more blended compared to traditional foil highlights.

⏳ Lived-in highlights take it a step further by incorporating deeper, darker tones at the roots and throughout the hair. The purpose of lived-in highlights is to mimic the way hair naturally lightens over time, resulting in a more effortless and less noticeable regrowth.

📸 This photo shows a lived-in highlight look! This client will be able to come in between every 12 weeks to a year for her desired level of maintenance.

⏰ Leave a little extra time for styling until you are accustomed to working with your extra volume and/or length.

⬇️ Apply conditioner mid-shaft, or low ponytail, down. Keep the conditioner or other moisturizing products off your rows.

🧴 Only use products your salon professional recommends for your extensions.

💨 Thoroughly dry the wefts. Allow for extra drying time as the wefted rows are dense and can hold more moisture.

🪢 Brush, brush, brush! Brushing your hair is very important. This will allow you to prevent & rid your hair of tangles while keeping your hair looking and feeling beautiful.

💤 Sleeping with a silk pillowcase not only feels great, but helps prevent your hair from tangling while sleeping.

🏊🏼‍♀️ Chlorine is not hair-friendly. If entering the pool or ocean, apply a leave-in conditioner mids-to-ends and put in a ponytail. NO braids while swimming.

☀️ Stay away from sunscreens containing Avobenzone and Octocrylene, these ingredients can turn your hair orange.

We did a full highlight and a base bump to lift the natural root color to achieve a lighter overall look, but that means my client’s roots will grow out with a harsh line of demarcation. 🎨Color Correction🎨

My beautiful client has been a vivids girl for a LONG time, rocking rainbows and bright colors for a while. She decided it was time to go into hair rehab, and give her hair a break from the bleach.

We stripped the rainbows from her hair, corrected underlying colors, and gave her some subtle color-blocking using a dark brown to compliment her natural black-brown! We finished with a K18 treatment and a trim to get her on the right track to healthy hair.

We’re loving the dimension she’s left with and excited to see how her hair heals!
