Eden: People+Planet
Formerly Eden Reforestation Projects, we are a nonprofit that works with global communities to restore landscapes and ecosystems.
We address drivers of deforestation, and strengthen environmental and community resilience with support from philanthropy. We work with local communities to restore forests on a massive scale, thereby creating jobs, protecting ecosystems, and helping mitigate climate change. Learn more about our work at edenprojects.org.
Eden Honduras' foresters have extensive training and experience in fire prevention and wildfire fighting. Our teams also receive annual training in prevention and emergency first aid - covering skills to effectively prevent and combat low intensity wildfires.
Eden contributes to Honduras’ early warning systems and uses resources like NASA satellite data. Critical information on fire locations, intensity, and wind patterns is essential for making informed decisions. 📡.
Our team collaborates with local authorities, other environmental organizations, and the local community to coordinate firefighting efforts, improving overall response and fire management effectiveness.
Our progress in mitigating fires is attributed to our team's experience, months of fire prevention before the peak wildfire season even begins and commitment throughout the fire season. We are grateful for our fire team that is dedicated to the preservation for people + the planet! 🌎
Honduras experienced a challenging fire season this year, with fire outbreaks throughout the country. This is how we worked with local communities to prevent damage and restore the beautiful landscape.
🌳 Our fire management activities are protecting trees we have planted since the launch in Honduras in 2020.
🦜 Our work protects habitats that allow animals to seek refuge during fires.
💧 The extreme heat (40+ degrees Celsius, 104+ degrees Fahrenheit) during the dry season directly impacts water sources in the towns of Honduras. By protecting the forests, we are helping prevent major water scarcity issues for the communities.
As the next fire season approaches, we need your support in continuing to restore and conserve the Honduras landscape. Join us in making long-term impact for the local communities and habitats. 🔥
Honduras experienced an intense fire season earlier this year. 294,000 hectares of land were affected by the fires – that’s the size of 550,000+ professional U.S. football stadiums.
The fires caused extreme temperatures and smoke in populated areas, which led to health warnings, evacuations, habitat loss and damage throughout surrounding communities.
Here’s what we did to help:
🔥 We worked with local communities and authorities to ensure effective fire training and firefighting to protect over 11,000 hectares of old-growth and new-growth forests.
🔥 Over 100 km of firebreaks were created, which decreased the spread of wildfire and protected countless trees.
🔥 We directly put out 54 wildfires in our conservation areas with the help of the Honduras community,
Our team will continue to monitor the fire damage and recovery. Creating active restoration plans to help with recovery where needed.
We are dedicated to expanding our fire prevention programs for the next fire season. Our work will continue protecting forests, watersheds, wildlife habitat, and the communities that depend on this ecosystem. 🌎

Although fires are natural in ecosystems, climate change, unpredictable weather, and unsustainable practices have made them more damaging and frequent. 🔥
This is an ongoing challenge for our restoration efforts, as fires contribute to landscape degradation and affect an entire regions’ access to vital resources, pollute the air, and threaten biodiversity.
We collaborate with local communities on fire preventative measures and provide training on the safest and most effective firefighting practices. Our goal is to ensure the safest mitigation strategies for both people+planet.
Together, we are making a profound impact on holistic restoration, preventing and combating the effects of climate change and wildfires.

Happy National Mangrove Day! Today, we celebrate the remarkable impact of mangroves and their essential role in sustaining our planet. These coastal estuaries provide numerous benefits for both people and the planet, including:
Coastal Protection: Mangroves act as natural barriers, protecting coastal regions and communities from cyclones, erosion, and rising sea levels.
Biodiversity Hotspots: These ecosystems offer vital habitats for diverse marine life, supporting fishers and local livelihoods.
Carbon Sequestration: Mangroves are significant carbon sinks, absorbing and storing large amounts of carbon dioxide, aiding in climate change mitigation.
With your support, we restore and conserve critical mangrove ecosystems as seen through our initiatives in Kenya and Madagascar.

Eden's teams meticulously collect, sort, and count the propagules to ensure precise quantities for planting. Once prepared, they are loaded into buckets and distributed to planting teams.
The mangrove species featured in this photo are primarily Ceriops tagal. These mangroves are crucial in stabilizing shorelines, reducing erosion, providing critical habitat for marine life, and sequestering carbon. By partnering with Eden, you are helping us restore natural habitats, support local communities, and foster biodiversity.

People are planting trees to alleviate the effects of extreme heat in Tanzania.
Working in extremely hot conditions can have serious health implications, particularly for pregnant women and people working outdoors. Supporting and nurturing trees can help cool the microclimate, providing relief and bringing balance to places facing extreme heat like Tanzania.
This is one of the many ways natural climate solutions such as landscape restoration can have a positive impact for people and the planet.

Eden's Cruzamento Nursery, located in the Manica Province of Mozambique, plays an important role in the country’s ongoing restoration efforts. With an annual production capacity of 400,000 seedlings, this nursery supports the critical restoration of two key sites: Cruzamento Santos and Sembezeia Sede.
The Cruzamento Nursery’s team cultivates a diverse range of native tree species crucial to Mozambique's ecological health, including: Kigelia africana, Entada abyssinica, Sclerocarya birrea, Afzelia quanzensis, and Swartzia madagascariensis. Each species plays a unique role in restoring degraded landscapes and promoting biodiversity.

At Eden’s La Muralla 1 Nursery in Cuero de Toro, Honduras, our team prepares germination beds by marking the exact area where each seed will be sown. This precise planting method ensures consistency by accounting for the optimal density of each bed and allows us to accurately track the number of tree seedlings produced.
