Alpha Tau Omega - UCSB

We are the Iota Nu chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, and we are located in Santa Barbara, California.

10/17/2017

We are hosting an all-day fundraiser tomorrow at Sam's To Go Isla Vista. All proceeds will be used to help support the victims of the Tubbs Fire in Santa Rosa. Many of us know someone who has been affected by the fire, and this fundraiser not only gives us the opportunity help out monetarily but also allows us to come together to show those who have been impacted by this tragedy that they are NOT alone.

The brothers of Alpha Tau Omega thank you in advance for your support!

**Please remember to fill out the slip at the counter and include how much you spend**

President of ATO (2015 -2016)
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Joined Fall 2013

“When I came to UCSB I didn’t really know a whole lot about Greek Life. I had no clue what rush was, and especially didn’t understand what being in a fraternity or sorority was all about. To be honest, I never anticipated joining a fraternity. However, as I look back at the time that I have spent here at UCSB, I am tremendously thankful for the impact that being a member of ATO has had on my life. Being a member of ATO has provided me with countless opportunities and advantages that I think I would have had trouble finding had I not joined.

Personally, ATO has been the backbone of my time here at UCSB. Although I have enjoyed being a dedicated and involved member of the chapter, I have also been able to pursue my other interests around campus. In fact, my passion for school has been amplified through studying with older brothers in the house, as well as the other engineering majors in my own grade. I was fortunate enough to be a member of the Freshman Orientation Staff last summer, and this was largely due to the support and the influence of some of the older members of ATO.

While all of the aforementioned benefits of being in ATO were absolutely important to my college experience, I believe that the most didactic aspect of my membership stems from the opportunity I had to hold several leadership positions. My freshman and sophomore year I was the Risk Management Chair, which was a position that taught me a lot about responsibility, personal sacrifice, and communication. This position taught me so much that I wanted to continue to give back to the house, and the following year I became President. Being President of ATO was an experience that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. The lessons that I learned from one year of running this great fraternity have been incredibly valuable to me as I continue moving forward with my life, and I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything.

This year is my senior year, and I am excited to be planning our signature philanthropic event, Rally, alongside another brother, Michael Palmer. I look forward to this opportunity to give back to the school, community, and the all the people that have given me so much these last three years. I assure you, the more you put into an organization like ATO, the more you will get out.

I am excited to welcome a new pledge class this fall, and cannot wait for all the good times that lay ahead in the final stretch of my college experience."

Best,
Matt Turner

"When I committed to UCSB back in 2013 I knew that I wanted to experience college to the absolute fullest. I knew that the only way I would be content with my degree was if I immersed myself in both the academics and the social life this college had to offer. I knew I had a keen interest in Greek Life, as the allure of a group of brothers living it up beachside in Santa Barbara really appealed to me.

In high school I participated in multiple sports, from track and field to jui jitsu, and the bond I created with my teammates was unmatched. I wanted that in college. After I was exposed to ATO during walkarounds freshman year, I instantly saw that exact bond exemplified between the members of the house and I knew it was the right fit for me.

Although joining a house is not necessary to have fun at a school like UCSB, I quickly learned that my decision to join ATO suited me perfectly. I immediately started to reap the benefits during pledgeship, ranging from the unreal social events to the support group my newfound brothers provided for me. For example, having taught, composed, and performed music throughout my life, creating a band when I arrived was a no brainer. My band even won the UCSB battle of the bands when I was a sophomore, played many shows downtown, and even got to record our first EP at Rose Lane Studios in Montecito thanks to funding from the UCSB music department.

All of this would not be possible without ATO. In other words, every show my band played got incredibly hyped up when anywhere from 50 to 100 of my brothers would bumrush the entrance and really make it a lively concert for me and my bandmates to enjoy. Even in my academia as a biology major, the vast diversity of science majors in the house provided study groups that allowed us to excel far beyond the non greek affiliated students. We set the curve in almost every class. Imagine a perfect balance of studying and social life with your best friends, all the while excelling more than anyone else on campus in both domains. This is what ATO has to offer. This is what ATO gave to me. During the summer I have been working in a studio in North Hollywood that has recorded celebrated artists and bands such as Michael Jackson and the Foo Fighters.

I plan on getting a masters degree in either Molecular Evolutionary Biology or Microbiology and then pursuing my dreams as a musician in Hollywood. Needless to say, my passion for success was there before I came to college, however without ATO and the people I am lucky to call my best friends, these passions would have not reached heir fullest potential in the short four years UCSB has to offer.”

Double Major: Film and Media Studies & English

"When I joined ATO I wasn’t sure if a fraternity would be accepting of my goals as a film maker and artist but I wanted to be apart of a larger social network, so I gave it a shot. I couldn’t have been more wrong; not only did I find a substantial community of people who support me as a person and as an artist but I was also able to market my work to a larger subset of the school than I would have been able to had I not rushed.

The idea that the Greek System or fraternaties in general aren’t supportive of artistic or creative types is a total myth. Just recently I launched my film and photography portfolio featuring a dozen models, friends, and other people working in entertainment almost all of whom I met through friends in the Greek System. The social support and networking opportunities that ATO and the Greek System in general offer are a massively underutilized niche for anyone looking to build upon their artistic vision and refine their creative voice.

Through the Greek System I met my good friend Charles Sharpe, who brought me on as the Assistant Director of a SAG New Media Project Pilot TV series that’s currently in negotiations for Season 1. Just this past summer I interned for Chris Bender, founder of Good Fear Film + Management who produced the American Pie films, The Hangover series, We’re The Millers, and The Ring after securing an interview application via a friend in a sorority. This past spring I won first place in the The Keith E. Vineyard Scholarship awards, UCSB’s creative writing short story contest with a short story edited by a few friends of mine in ATO who are also English majors. Next year I hope to work at United Talent Agency. Eventually I hope to write and direct my own films or series.”

Nick Roco
Rushed: Spring 2014
Major: Economics & Accounting

As an upcoming 4th year Economics & Accounting major interested in both the finance and consulting fields, Alpha Tau Omega has allowed Nick to develop and grow on both a personal and professional level. Throughout his time in ATO, Nick has been exposed to many different skills that he has leveraged to help accomplish his goals.

During his Sophomore summer, Nick completed a 12-week long internship at J.P. Morgan Securities in Santa Barbara, CA. Additionally, he recently completed an 8-week long internship at Deloitte Advisory in San Francisco, CA. He believes that he was able to secure these positions because of the experiences he has had while being in the house and contributes much of his success to the friendships and relationships that he has made within ATO.

After graduation, Nick plans on doing full-time consulting with Deloitte Advisory out of the San Francisco office. Without the invaluable advice and guidance that he has received from other ATO members, Nick believes that his overall college and career experience would not have been the same. ATO has served as a fantastic resource for Nick on a variety of different levels, and he hopes to continue this development during his senior year.
