I've attached a newsletter that summarizes what we've been up to this past winter quarter, so feel free to check it out and please share your thoughts!

As ARC, it is my job--and pleasure--to be able to engage with GPhi's past. I'd love to be able to interview some of you, whether that be about your career, your past, or any business you're in that you'd like to promote. Our sister Ellie Lee-Morrow (California-Santa Barbara) graduated and is now looking to break into the cosmetic chemistry industry! And as an alumna member she’ll remember the times the chapter was all together the most. Founders Day, recruitment and sisterhoods, β€œI loved being surrounded by my little community and feeling safe and at home in the big group.” She’s excited to visit post-COVID-19. | πŸ“Έ: UCSB Gamma Phi Beta.

Hello ladies, I hope everyone is doing well! A current sister of ours is looking for some alum to help her out with some activities for an organization she created!

Calling all Gphi Sociology Alum!
My name is Nicole Bongard and I am currently a third year sociology major. I created an organization on campus called the Sociology Association for all Soc majors to get together and learn about potential career, internship, and research opportunities, interact with the professors, and find out what grad school is all about. This quarter, I would like to create an alumni panel for sociology majors to tell our club more about the grad school process, potential career opportunities, and any networking advice you have! It would be greatly appreciated! If interested, please email me at [email protected] and let me know your name and availability in the next few weeks!! Thank you!

It is $32 ( depending on the size) and 20% of the proceeds will be donated to Girls on the Run!

Here is the google form to order and make sure to share with your friends!

So this going to be the last Crescent Catch Up of both 2019 and of my tenure as Alumnae Relations Chair. I have loved being the liaison between you all and the actives, and getting to know some of you personally has really enhanced my GPhi experience. Thank you so much for working with me to better the relationship between our collegians and alums, and I will make sure my successor continues the Crescent Catch Up and our closer relationship.

For the last Crescent Catch Up, I want to honor my mom who was a Gamma Phi at UCLA, so without further ado, this week's πŸŒ™ Crescent Catch Up πŸŒ™ is Malinda Wozniak Marcus, an active from 1989-1992 who majored in English. After graduation, she worked as a substitute teacher and a gymnastics coach at a local community center. She then went to grad school at Pepperdine University from 1994-96 and got a masters in education and teaching credential. She didn't go straight into teaching, rather she became a buyer of TV time for infomercials. She became a stay-at-home mom in 1999 and went back into the work force as a teacher in 2014 and currently works at Mulholland Middle School as an 8th grade English teacher.

1. Did you have an positions?

πŸŒ™ I was a greeter during rush. They only picked a few girls and I was surprised because I wasn't blonde.

2. What were your favorite philanthropies?

πŸŒ™ A portion of our dues went to Girls on the Run, but we didn’t have any fundraisers. We also had a banquet every year for the American Heart Association. It was a formal event at Century Plaza or the Beverly Hills Hotel in Century City and Beverly Hills respectively.

3. What were your favorite date parties?

πŸŒ™ We had a winter date party called Prohibition held in a speakeasy type bar in Hollywood where we dressed up in 1920s.

4. What were your favorite socials?

πŸŒ™ We did a Mardi Gras party with Phi Delta Theta. We did a homecoming social with DTD where we rented busses to go to the homecoming football game at the Rose Bowl. We had a Heaven and Hell social with Delta Chi from USC a week before initiation. The pledges had to wear white and the actives had to wear red or black. The guys were jerks, but I had a lot of fun with my sisters.

5. Who were your favorite frats?

πŸŒ™ Phi Delta Theta. The guys were really down to Earth and wanted to get to know us. Also DTD because they put on really good parties with great music and were a lot of fun.

6. How many GPhis from UCLA are you still in close contact with?

πŸŒ™ Facebook has helped me connect a lot. I probably still talk to 10 closely. I was a bridesmaid in one of my sisters’ weddings and she was in my wedding too.

7. What were your favorite memories of being in GPhi?

πŸŒ™ Rock, Rap, Reggae was a party at the Santa Monica Pier thrown by the 1990 pledge class for the actives. There was a restaurant dance club there and we all dressed up in a style that matched the music themes. My favorite memory was when we were getting ready for rush and I was a greeter. We were practicing for one of our parties and the theme was Grease. It was really hot and somebody had the brilliant idea of putting a tent over the courtyard to provide shade, but it actually kept the heat in and everyone’s makeup was coming off. Everyone was so tired to the point that we were just laughing out of deliriousness and cracking jokes.

8. What do you love about GPhi at UCSB?

πŸŒ™ The sisters have a really great comradery and there seems to be little competitiveness. People are there to help each other out and be as friendly as possible. I really see the closeness between people.

9. How has GPhi helped you after graduation?

πŸŒ™ I learned how to speak with poise and with dignity. We were taught how to present ourselves positively and confidently. Our CLCs would teach us how to talk to girls that were rushing, so I can talk to strangers a lot better now and am good at making conversation with people I don’t know.

10. You met the woman at Founder's Day, so what comes to your mind when you hear the name, "Lois Abbot Jacobs?"

πŸŒ™ She’s well dressed, well-composed, and elegant. I can tell she has a marked presence in the chapter whether she is actually there or not.

While there is no Crescent Catch Up this week, I would like to take the time to mention how we had our most successful Founder's Day in 6 years in terms of alums that attended this past Saturday! We had 22 alumnae from 11 different chapters celebrating with us at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort. It was amazing to see over 100 women take part in our ritual service. Definitely make sure to check back around this time next week for the penultimate Crescent Catch Up of 2019!

Photos from UCSB Gamma Phi Beta Alumnae's post 11/13/2019

This week's πŸŒ™ Crescent Catch UpπŸŒ™ is Payton Becerra, an active from 2012-15 and member of Heartthrob Fam! She majored in psychology and minored in applied psych. After graduation, she got her master's degree in social work from Cal State Fullerton in 2018. She is currently working in an acute psychiatric hospital doing social work.

1. Did you have any positions in the house?

πŸŒ™ I was house manager, community service chair, and standards chair.

2. What were your favorite date parties?

πŸŒ™ Crescent Ball was always a favorite. We once had a date party where we went to Sky High that was fun too.

3. What were your favorite philanthropies?

πŸŒ™ Pancake Breakfast was my favorite. I looked forward to being a senior and flipping pancakes. I liked having friends and family involved as well as just Greek life because it was more community based.

4. What were your favorite socials?

πŸŒ™ My very first one was toga party hosted by Beta. It was the perfect stereotypical Greek like social to kick off my Greek experience.

5. Which apartments did you live in and what was your favorite part about living in the house?

πŸŒ™ I lived in exec twice as well as 18. I loved having all of my friends in one centralized location. It was quite normal to walk in and out of people's rooms. It was a lot of fun.

6. How many GPhis from UCSB are you still in close contact with?

πŸŒ™ Mostly just my immediate lineage like Sarah Dimonte, Lidia Wells, and Vanessa Staton. Also Christina Battle too.

7. What were you favorite memories of being in GPhi?

πŸŒ™ A couple Deltopias with my sisters were super fun. When I was in school, Pitch Perfect had just come out and we all watched it together a lot. Also just hanging out in the Chappy and going to Freebirds.

8. How has GPhi helped you after graduation?

πŸŒ™ It gave me a lot of leadership experience I didn't have before. Being in a group of girls where everyone is so different makes you realize you can bring something special to the table and that we can all play off each others' strengths. It taught me that if I could make it into a sorority and find my place, I could do anything, which boosted my self confidence. It also made me realize that I'm not alone and that people would help you get through it and love me no matter what.

9. What comes to mind when you hear the name, "Lois Abbot Jacobs?"

πŸŒ™ "Heels." That woman is amazing, but during polish week, she basically held a seminar on how to walk in high heels. She is a fundamental part of Delta Psi. I can't say anything about GPhi without thinking about Lois.

Photos from UCSB Gamma Phi Beta Alumnae's post 11/05/2019

This week's πŸŒ™ Crescent Catch Up πŸŒ™ is Hayley Eyer, a communication major who was an active spring 2012-14 and member of Lush Fam! After graduation, she went to Southeast Asia for 2 months to do volunteer projects. It changed her life and she realized she wanted get into the tourism business. She worked with a company in travel sales in San Diego and while working with them, got to be somewhat of a camp counselor in the Dominican Republic and Guatemala. She also got to intern in Costa Rica for 8 months! She started grad school in 2016 and got her MBA in international business from San Diego State in 2018. Afterwards, she backpacked through Eastern Europe by herself for 6 months. She found job in London and has been living there for 6 months now doing travel sales where she creates personalized road trips for rich Britons visiting California and the American southwest.

1. Did you have any positions?

πŸŒ™ I was a Rho Gamma. The only girl that joined our house from my group was Lauren Atkinson.

2. What were your favorite date parties?

πŸŒ™ We had one where we went to a trampoline place and everyone was bouncing until they were absolutely exhausted.

3. What were your favorite philanthropies?

πŸŒ™ Sigma Nu Olympics was a really fun day. It wasn't super sporty, so there was better competition and everyone could participate. Obviously Pancake Breakfast was the best because who doesn't love pancakes. I loved flipping pancakes as a senior.

4. What were your favorite socials?

πŸŒ™ We did a Paint Party with Sigma Pi where everyone was wearing white and we were split into teams and you were supposed to cover the other teams with your color. The weirder and quirkier the dress up was for a social, the more fun it was for me.

5. Who are your favorite frats?

πŸŒ™ First we were close to Beta, but then they had an incident where the deck at their senior house collapsed and they were kicked out of the school. Then we were close with Sigma Pi because were were both laid back houses. The next year, Sigma Nu came to campus and they weren't fratty yet because they were new and that because our new favorite by the time I graduated.

6. What was your favorite part about living in the house?

πŸŒ™ I loved that at any time, I had 52 closets. I never bought anything I could just go room to room and everyone wanted to help you look amazing. Especially when there were dress ups, you had access to any crazy costume. I lived in apartment 16 and I once saw 4 raccoons wrestling in the fountain. I would always go into apartment 6 because it was Chelsea Fahl's room and Friends would be playing on the tv 24/7. We'd always hang out until I wanted to sleep. There was always someone down to go anywhere with you too.

7. How many GPhis from UCSB are you still in close contact with?

πŸŒ™ Nicole Corbo and Chelsea Fahl are my two GPhi BFFs. I see them every two months evening Europe. I also love talking to Quincy Nelson.

8. What were your favorite memories of being in GPhi?

πŸŒ™ It's not a specific memory, but I moved around a lot when I was younger and joining GPhi was super great just because it gave me a really solid sense of community. I met all of the right people and they were all in the same house. I made other groups of best friends outside of the sorority and I owe that ability all to GPhi. It was always a safe space to seek out.

9. How has GPhi helped you after graduation?

πŸŒ™ It's been really good to meet women I really respect. The girls I became friends with in GPhi gave me a great template on who to seek out when make future friends. I also still have an unwavering support system that I forged in GPhi.

Photos from UCSB Gamma Phi Beta Alumnae's post 10/28/2019

This week's πŸŒ™ Crescent Catch Up πŸŒ™ is Hunter Batholomew, an active from 2012-16 who was a member of Princess Fam! She double majored in communication and film and media studies and upon graduation, she moved to LA and got a job at Prometheus Studios. She is currently an associate producer for the company where she makes documentaries and reality shows. Her favorite project that she did research for was a 6 part series on the history channel called The Tesla Files.

1. Did you have any positions?

πŸŒ™ I was EVP and presents chair.

2. What were your favorite date parties?

πŸŒ™ We went to Magic Mountain one year. One of my best friends from Santa Clarita came up for spring formal one year and got to see UCSB and my friends for the first time. We also had a masquerade themed date party that I really enjoyed.

3. What were your favorite philanthropies?

πŸŒ™ I always liked the tournaments where we went out onto the field. We had one where we jousted with inflatable spears. I loved working Pancake Breakfast and hanging out with my friends after my shifts. Bacon duty sucked because I smelled like bacon all day, but flipping pancakes as a senior was great. It was one of the best philanthropies because you can just eat the whole time.

4. What were your favorite socials?

πŸŒ™ We had a pajama one with rugby and my roommates and I all wore animal onesies. We also had a Halloween themed one with Sigma Nu where about 7 of us dressed as Dalmatians.

5. What were your favorite frats?

πŸŒ™ We spent a lot of time with Sigma Nu and AEPi.

6. What was your favorite part about living in the house?

πŸŒ™ I lived in apartment's 18, Exec, and 14. My favorite part was that it was super convenient to get ready for meetings and socials. It was also super close to campus and food as well as cheaper than anywhere else in IV.

7. How many GPhis from UCSB are you still in close contact with?

πŸŒ™ I still talk to my old roommate Brooke Yegan as well as Lisa Weber.

8. What were your favorite memories of being in GPhi?

πŸŒ™ Probably Big/Little week my freshman year because who doesn't love getting gifts every day for a week. Most of my favorite memories are hanging out with my roommates and friends and having dinner parties. Brooke and other friends and I would travel downtown every other week and go wine and cheese tasting.

9. How has GPhi helped you after graduation?

πŸŒ™ It helped me get a lot better at public speaking and talking to strangers. I now know how to get people who don't know me to like me, which is helpful in job interviews. There are many interpersonal skills that I wouldn't have gotten if I hadn't joined GPhi.

10. What comes to your mind when you hear the name, "Lois Abbott Jacobs?"

πŸŒ™ "Pantyhose" because she would yell at us if we didn't wear them with our dresses. She thought everyone should wear those at rush even though no one had worn those regularly in 2 decades. Even so, I don't think I've ever met anyone else who's given so much to their sorority. She is a very nice lady who has given her all. She also has the most beautiful house!

This week's πŸŒ™ Crescent Catch Up πŸŒ™ is Julie Drexler Desmarais, an English major who was an active from 1994-98! While still at school, she interviewed and got a job in the Bay Area in the semi-conductor industry. She got married and had kids before leaving the Bay Area for San Diego in 2004. In 2016, she moved to New Hampshire where she currently resides and works as the director of international sales for a software company.

1. Did you have any positions in the house?

πŸŒ™ I was rush chair freshman year, MVP sophomore year, and President my junior year.

2. What was your favorite part about living in the house?

πŸŒ™ I lived in apartments, 8, 20, 11 and 13 part time, and President's. I loved always having friends around. You could always visit someone and have study partners in the chapter room. After graduation, my friends and I would always visit the first week of August because there was this big event downtown called Siesta, and we would all sleep in the Chappy together.

3. What were your favorite date parties?

πŸŒ™ I loved our Grab-A-Dates. We had a disco themed party and a 20s themed party. We had a date party at The Big Yellow House and that was really nice.

4. What were your favorite philanthropies?

πŸŒ™ I enjoyed working first hand with Girls Inc. We planted a garden for them and went trick or treating with them.

5. What were your favorite socials?

πŸŒ™ I really liked going to the annual Dodger's game with ATO. We had this social called Suitcase Party. There were different raffle prizes you could win and the biggest one was a trip to Vegas for that night, so you had to pack a suitcase in case you won.

6. Who were your favorite frats?

πŸŒ™ I had lots of friends in ATO and Delta Upsilon.

7. How many GPhis from UCSB are you still in close contact with?

πŸŒ™ Amy Sullivan, Shelly MacIlraith Little, Jennifer Cadmus Wilson, Mary Fontamillas-Rohrer, Kelly Gordon, Jen Paola, and many others I don't see as often as I'd, like but we keep in touch. Most of my longest and closest friends are sisters. At my wedding, they all formed a little circle around me and sang "Tonight."

8. What were your favorite memories of being in GPhi?

πŸŒ™ We had a spring break trip to San Felipe and multiple ski trips. I loved congregating at Sam's and taking part in ISVT. We did a flag football tournament with other sororities that was fun.

9. What is your favorite pool memory?

πŸŒ™ I don't remember going in the pool voluntarily because it was so cold. It was fun when everyone would jump in after date party though. One time, we had a competitive game of Assassins against ZBT where you had to get someone wet to get them out. I was dragged out of my bed at 2 or 3 in the morning and thrown in the pool during that competition.

10. How has GPhi helped you after graduation?

πŸŒ™ I didn't realize when I was there, but when I went into the work world. I realized how much it taught me about business. I knew how to take minutes, run a committee, how meetings worked, how to vote on things, and how to interview. I felt very well equipped. GPhi has also given me close friends where no matter how much time has passed, we just know each other. I even lived with sisters in San Francisco after graduation.

11. What comes to your mind when you hear the name, "Lois Abbott Jacobs?"

πŸŒ™ Total dedication to the house and someone who was aways there for us and taught us everything. She and the other advisors were like house moms. I remember her coming to the house with gloves and gardening. She was a constant and enhanced my experience.

Photos from UCSB Gamma Phi Beta Alumnae's post 10/14/2019

This week's πŸŒ™ Crescent Catch Up πŸŒ™ is Kathy Poling Moore, an active from 1986-90! She majored in psychology and went to a job fair and got a job in Human Resources right out of college. She did employment type work in Fullerton and then moved to Newport Beach and worked in compensation for an insurance company. In 1995, she moved back to Santa Barbara and worked her way up from clerical assistant to the manager of the compensation unit at UCSB!

1. Did you have any positions?

πŸŒ™ I was the assistant treasurer on junior exec my sophomore year, treasurer on exec my junior year, and vice president my senior year, where I was in charge of running junior exec.

2. What were your favorite philanthropies?

πŸŒ™ Before Girls on the Run existed, our main philanthropy was a place called Camp Seashell run by the Girl Guides of Canada. It was a place where underprivileged and abused girls got to go to this summer camp on the beach in Canada. I never did it because I wasn't adventurous, but GPhis would go and be camp counselors

3. What were your favorite date parties?

πŸŒ™ We always had a themed date party that I loved. My senior year, everyone was assigned a different decade. We also went to Palm Springs for a spring formal and we had one at Pismo Beach as well.

4. What were your favorite socials?

πŸŒ™ The Trasher with Sigma Nu. Everyone wore white shirts and we had magic markers. They covered the floor in newspaper so you couldn't see the floor. It was kind of like a graffiti party. It forced you to mingle, which was good. I had a lot of friends in Sig Ep and had a great party called the Bahama Bash.

5. Who was your favorite frat?

πŸŒ™ Sig Ep because I had a lot of friends from high school and my dorm in that house.

6. What was your favorite part about living in the house?

πŸŒ™ I lived in apartments 15, 18, and 19 and always enjoyed being amongst so many people that I loved and adored. It was always relatively quiet, safe and clean. We always had the suite doors open and it was like having lots of roommates all of the time.

7. How many GPhis from UCSB are you still in close contact with.

πŸŒ™ I'm still in contact with my little Carole Jessup Walker and a handful of other girls. Through Facebook, I'm in contact with dozens though. Facebook has helped me get reacquainted with a lot of people and that's been a lot of fun.

8. What were your favorite memories of being in GPhi?

πŸŒ™ Ritual meetings where we would sing, PACE meetings with a guest speaker, and Monday night dinners in general where Lois would talk for way too long. I loved rallying for events as well.

9. What comes to your mind when you hear the name Lois Abbott Jacobs?

πŸŒ™ I have very endearing thoughts, even though she was always trying to get people to commit to stuff. People would disappear when she came in order to avoid her. But she was around our mom's age, so she was like a parent away from home. We loved her and considered her the voice of reason. She feels like an old friend when I see her. I respect her immensely.

10. How has GPhi helped you after graduation?

πŸŒ™ It has helped me develop leadership and organizational skills. I learned how to run meetings, lead projects, speak in front of people, and other types of event planning and coordination. It has truly helped me build up my skills and experience in professional development.
