This is MagPie's third year participating in the ACVO event with Dr. LaFoon & she is always such a good girl for us! 🥰

She is a diabetic alert dog for her mom! Diabetic alert dogs are trained to alert when blood sugar levels change. They signal low or high glucose by poking with their nose. Unlike machines that might be ignored, dogs keep trying until they get a response!

Faith came in to see us today for our ACVO Service Dog event! Faith was such a good girl for her exam, her service is a Guide for The Blind for her mom!

MagPie is a diabetic assistance dog who was given a screening eye exam during the 2023 Service Animal Event, by board certified veterinary ophthalmologist, Dr. Brooklynn Lafoon, of Carolina Veterinary Specialists Greensboro. Dr. LaFoon got special recognition from Epicur for the service dog event from last year! We are so excited for this years event and hope to see all the service, working and therapy dogs!

Each year, trained Service and Working Animals, and some qualified assistance and therapy animals, can be registered to receive these sight-preserving screenings. Registration is limited via qualification and occurs only April 1st – April 30th annually, online through this website.
The ACVO/Epicur National Service Animal Eye Exam event is a philanthropic effort generously provided to the public by the board certified Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists who donate their time, staff and services to provide free screening ocular exams to qualified Service and Working Animals.

Rita & Remie came in for an OFA eye certification exam with Dr. LaFoon a couple weeks back & were such good patients for us! They passed with flying colors!

The purpose of an OFA Companion Animal Eye exam is to provide breeders with information regarding canine eye diseases so that they can make informed breeding decisions in an effort to breed healthier dogs.

Maui & Scotlynn stopped by to visit us yesterday! Dr. LaFoon is treating Maui for feline herpes virus & he is doing well with treatment!

Herpesvirus infection is the most common cause of conjunctivitis in cats. The most common clinical signs of conjunctivitis include: squinting or closing of the eye, red, swollen tissue surrounding the eye and eyelids, ocular discharge that may range from clear to yellow or green.

The Dominguez's stopped in today for their boston terrier, Callie's recheck! Showed us this picture and we knew everybody else needed to see it!

Callie & Roscoe have been clients of ours since the beginning of the year and they have been such a joy & are doing great with treatment!

Everyone help me wish Makenzy, a very Happy Birthday!! She moved to the department in January and we are so happy to have her!

Meet Mr. Wrangler! Wrangler is dedicated to helping our ophthalmology patients by donating his blood so we can collect serum for severe corneal ulcerations.

When a dog or cat donates blood, serum is taken from the blood product and can be used to treat a variety of diseases, infections and disorders in the eye, such as corneal ulcers. Corneal ulcers are very common in cats and dogs, and serum eye drops can be a essential part of the treatment given to them. The serum from our generous blood donor is vital to allow the Ophthalmology department to continue to help to save the vision of patients!

Mr. Rudy has restored vision after Dr. LaFoon performed cataract surgery (phacoemulsification and artificial lens implants) on him in June. Rudy had gone blind due to his diabetic cataracts. He has done amazing post-op!

Did you know that Golden Retrievers have a breed specific type of uveitis? Pigmentary Uveitis is a bilateral inherited disease of Golden Retrievers, also know as GRPU. Subtle signs of this disease includes redness, it will make it difficult to detect a problem at home until the disease is more advanced. A veterinary ophthalmologist can detect pigment on the lens and uveal cysts (fluid-filled structures behind the iris) as the earliest signs during the ophthalmic examination. In advanced stages of GRPU, can lead to glaucoma, cataract formation and blindness.

These two patients were seen today for GRPU. Comet is 5 years old and is overall healthy despite his GRPU. Teddy is 10 years old and in the last two pictures he was seen by Dr. LaFoon 2 weeks ago for a mass removal on both of his eyelids! He is doing great, he also has GRPU and is doing great with treatment so far.
