Did you know heartworm treatment can cost up to 9x the cost of heartworm preventative?!
That’s right! The average cost of heartworm treatment for dogs is often around $1,300. However, it can range from $1,000to $1,800 or even more depending mainly on the size of your dog, veterinary bills, and the stage of the disease.
Heartworm preventative is an important part of providing essential care for your dog 🐶 . As we all know, Heartworm is transmitted by infected mosquitoes 🦟 and can go months without detection.
Dogs need prevention all year round, not just during warm-weather months where we see more mosquitoe activity. Heartworm preventives work by treating heartworms that already infected the pet within the past month or longer; meanwhile, preventives need to be given on time, every time to be most effective.
If you have any questions about Heartworm preventatives or need to have your pet tested for Heartworm, please call 📞 336-279-1003 to schedule an appointment with one of our trusted veterinarians 🧑⚕️.
At University Animal Hospital our veterinarians and staff cannot stress the importance of vaccinating your pet for the core vaccines. Especially in puppies who can subjected to deadly diseases, such as parvovirus .
What is parvovirus? It is a virus that attacks the intestinal tract and causes the puppy to have vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, lack of appetite and can lead to death.
How is parvovirus treated? Parvovirus is treated symptomatically. That means we try to treat for the dehydration (fluid therapy), give medication to entice the pet to eat, and medication for nausea and vomiting.
We can diagnose this disease through f***l testing. The best way to combat this virus is to vaccinate you puppies appropriately and keep them away from other dogs until they receive the appropriate vaccines to keep them and others protected.

True or false: oral disease is an inevitable part of aging.
False. Regular dental home care and routine professional cleanings can help ward off dental disease as pets age. Just as age is not a disease, dental disease is not inevitable for senior pets.
Just a quick friendly reminder, we will be having our weekly staff meeting today, August 14th from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM. The office will be closed at this time 🐶🐾🐱
Bordetella Bronchiseptica (BBV): This highly infectious bacterium causes severe fits of coughing, whooping, vomiting, and, in rare cases, seizures and death. It is the primary cause of kennel cough. There are injectable and nasal spray vaccines available.
If you plan on boarding your puppy in the future, attending group training classes, or using dog daycare services, often proof of this vaccination will be a requirement. We recommend your dog receiving a Bordetella booster every six-to-twelve months based on your pet's risk of exposure to Bordetella.
(UAH uses the Nobivac Intra-Trac 3 Vaccine)

Is bad breath normal in pets?
While it may be easy to brush off unpleasant breath as just part of your pet's life, it is an indicator of an oral infection. The malodor is usually caused by byproducts of bacteria that form plaque, and, if not treated, periodontal disease.
If you've noticed your pet's bad breath, it's time to give our clinic a call at (336)279-1003 and schedule a dental exam and cleaning.
August is National Immunization Awareness Month, which serves as a reminder to make sure your cat is up-to-date on their vaccines. Check out the infographic for more information about vaccines and cats.
University Animal Hospital has partnered with OncoK9 to offer an early detection cancer test!
OncoKa9 can detect 30 different cancer types, including eight of the most common cancers in dogs. It is recommended as an annual screening test for all dogs starting at 7 years of age and potentially at younger ages for dogs belonging to breeds that are predisposed to cancer. If you are unsure if your pet is a breed predisposed to cancer, please consult with Dr. Hunt.
As with any laboratory test, OncoK9 results should be interpreted by a veterinarian in the context of each patient's medical history and clinical presentation. The test is available by prescription only.
If you are interested in this program or test, please call our office at 336-279-1003
Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious viral disease of dogs that commonly causes acute gastrointestinal illness in puppies.
The disease most often strikes in pups between six and 20 weeks old, but older animals are sometimes also affected. A rare variant of the disease may be seen in very young puppies is myocarditis (an inflammation of the heart muscle).
We are OPEN today until 5:30pm! Please call (336)279-1003 if you need anything for your pets today! 🐶🐱🐾
