Internal applicants can often be a huge win for a company and hiring manager. But when an internal applicant does NOT get the job they're applying for, they're nearly *two* times as likely to quit as those who never applied at all.

You’ve recruited the best Accounting Manager you’ve ever interviewed! The offer letter is signed, the background check is cleared, and the start date is set. Whew. Now the hard work is done. Or is it?

The reality is that your first 90 days with a new hire is crucial to their long-term success. Research shows that one-third of approximately 1,000 employees have quit a job within six months of starting it. That’s a lot of time, energy, and money. So how do you ensure longevity?

✨ Onboarding starts before they start. Consider sending the new hire access to your company’s intranet or any pre-boarding portals where they can start completing necessary paperwork, thus freeing up their first day for more engaging activities.

✨ Document processes and procedures. Utilize tools that allow you to create step-by-step guides or videos explaining common procedures within your department.

✨ Set up cross-functional dialogue. Encourage your new hire to interact with different departments early on. Understanding how the accounting functions tie into other parts of the business is essential for a holistic view of the company’s objectives.

Have you ever wondered how to write the perfect resume? How to capture all of your accomplishments and successes? We created a guide to writing a succinct, modern resume that will help gain attention from hiring managers. You want to include important things like a summary, professional experience, take into account the length -- no more than 2 pages, and add in education & technical skills.

An interview's strength depends on asking the right questions. We recommend making a list of open-ended questions to use with each candidate you interview for a particular role and ask each candidate the same questions. This is the best way to assess every candidate you interview fairly.

Second, get to know the person -- what do they value in life and work? What is their background? It's a good way to see who they are outside of their skills set. Ask things like, "What legacy did you leave at your last job?"

Last but not least, offer the opportunity for the candidate to ask *you* questions. What type of questions are they asking you? (Hint: if you're being interviewed, always have a spare question or two!).

How do you keep younger workers engaged? This is a common challenge across the board for leaders adjusting to over five generations in the workforce at once. Gallup shares some key actions that leaders and managers can take to build a culture of trust, connection, and growth:

✨ Communicate a clear, compelling vision of the organization's purpose, values, and goals.

✨ Establish clear expectations for remote / in-person office time. Clarity is kindness! Development and purpose are keys to moving from a gig-worker mindset that has emerged since the pandemic -- and is detached emotionally from the organization -- to a mindset that is more connected to the organization. In-person time helps to build the strongest learning and loyalty.

✨ 70% of managers say they have not been trained to manage a hybrid workforce and are increasingly less engaged, burned out, and looking for other jobs. Help them simplify their role to coaching their employees through clear goals, accountability and having one meaningful conversation weekly with each person they manage.

✨ Leaders and managers must set an example by being on-site regularly. Employees need to receive clear and meaningful communication about the benefits of in-person time for the employee, organization and customers.

✨ Offer flexibility for employees who need to be on-site full time.

✨ Encourage collaboration and innovation by asking for and acting on younger workers' ideas and opinions.

Some of our team recently had the opportunity to participate in and speak at the GACC South - German American Chamber of Commerce of the Southern U.S., Inc. SME Conference in Atlanta last month. The Southeast is an amazing melting pot of cultures—and the diversity of nationalities, companies, and people make us stronger. Attracting the right talent can feel like a full-time job... no kidding. While the hype and chaos of 2022 has calmed a bit, the labor market remains historically tight. Employers are having to become more competitive than ever, and compensation continues to rise. Here are some of the tried-and-true tips we’ve seen work... more on our blog (link below).

✨Craft your why - Every company and every role have a unique story to share, but how you communicate it makes all the difference.

✨Don't rely on applications: go hunting.

✨Interviews seal the deal: craft a great experience by asking the right questions, and making the candidate feel welcome.

✨Move with speed, but also due diligence. References matter!

✨Craft a strong offer. This does not just mean compensation. Of course, cash compensation is a crucial piece of the package for most candidates along with other elements we found to be just as important: Benefits, Paid Time Off, Flexibility.

Last weekend, Forge Search turned THREE! 🎉 Here are some words from our founder, Rhiannon Poore: "A client/friend asked me if we were farther along (...or not) than I would have imagined when I started Forge. I paused, because it’s a hard question to answer. The truth is that we ARE further along than I would have thought, but it’s also been a lot harder than I could have imagined.

From the outset, I have wanted Forge to play a part in making recruiting human again. To work diligently and ethically as partners to our clients and the candidates. We are not perfect, but I trust every single person on our team to do the right thing and that means the world.
