Carolina Buddhist Vihara

Warm greetings friends,

This is Ayya Sobhana writing. I have come to care for the Carolina Buddhist Vihara, Greenville, while Ayya Sudinna is away on a family visit.

To introduce myself, I began to practice with Bhante Henepola Gunaratana in 1989, went forth as a samaneri with him in 2003, and received the full ordination at Dambulla, Sri Lanka, in 2006. For several years, Ayya Sudinna and I resided together at the Bhavana Society, and she assisted in my training as a new Bhikkhuni. I have been staying with Dhammadharini in California since 2010. I have led meditation retreats at the Bhavana Society, Southern Dharma, Spirit Rock, and various Sutta study and Dhamma programs at Dhammadharini and the San Francisco Bay area. Here are some opportunities if you would like to see and speak with me (all times given in Eastern Standard Time for Greenville, South Carolina). I will be here through December 13, and Ayys Sudinna will be returning on December 7.

In-person for programs at the Vihara
Evening Program: puja, meditation and Dhamma discussion, each Monday and Thursday 6 - 8:00 pm
Women's Dhamma Group, each Friday 9:30 - 10:30 am
Poya Program: Including a pot luck lunch, meditation, chanting, a Dhamma talk, and renewing the three refuges and precepts. New Moon, Sunday November 27, Full Moon Sunday December 11, 9:30 am - 3:00 pm. Ok to attend for part of the day.

Exciting News!

In September of 2019 CBV initiated a Stupa Project for the backyard at the Vihara. Our fundraising efforts and the generosity of many sangha members allowed for the Stupa to be commissioned in Sri Lanka.

What we were unaware of at the time was that there would be a global pandemic that halted the progress of this project. Malika Vejay, co-founder of CBV, has been informed that the Stupa is now complete, photo below.

What remains to be done is:
shipping from Sri Lanka to the US
land transportation from the Port of Charleston to the Vihara
and site work at the Vihara

While great generosity was shown when the project was initiated there were not enough funds to complete the project therefore we are asking for donations to complete this project.

If you can please consider a donation to CBV for the Stupa Fund. You can donate to this worthy cause by mailing a check directly to the Vihara referencing the Stupa Project.

Percy was a founding member of the Sangha, much loved and respected.

Dear friends and family, my father passed away yesterday. Please pass on to anyone may have known him at Memorial Mission Hospital

Percy Kahaduwe (89) of formally of
Asheville,NC passed away on June 6, 2022 at WellStar Tranquility in Kennesaw, Ga.

A native of Sri Lanka, he was the son of the late Alfred and Nellie Kahaduwe. He was preceded in death by his brother, Chulamani and sister, Chandra. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years Kanthi Kahaduwe, son Ajit Kahaduwe and his wife Amalia, grand children Amali and Anil, of Marietta, Georgia.

He graduated from the University of Sri Lanka with a B.A. Degree in Economics. He worked for the government of Sri Lanka, Ceylon Leather Products Corporation, Ceylon Tire Corporation and Singer Industries.

He and his family immigrated to the United States in 1971. After obtaining a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Western Carolina University in 1973, he joined Memorial Mission Hospital holding administrative positions, in Nursing
Administration and retired in 1996.

While in retirement he devoted his time to volunteer work. He was a volunteer for SHIIP of the NC Department of Insurance, Tax Counselor for AARP. He served as Director / Treasurer on the Board of Directors of United Services Credit Union and was a Precinct Judge for Buncombe County Board of Elections. He was a member of the Carolina Buddhist Vihara, Greenville, S.C.
