Memory Consolidation during Ultra-short Offline States 08/17/2023

Could zoning out for just a few seconds here and there improve your memory? A new paper from the Furman Sleep Lab says “Yes!”.

Memory Consolidation during Ultra-short Offline States Abstract. Traditionally, neuroscience and psychology have studied the human brain during periods of “online” attention to the environment, while participants actively engage in processing sensory stimuli. However, emerging evidence shows that the waking brain also intermittently enters an “off...

Our Story

We spend nearly a third of our lives sleeping, and even during wakefulness, approximately half of our time is spent mind wandering -- thinking, reminiscing, daydreaming or imagining something other than what we are currently doing. Research in our laboratory concerns the function of these offline states of sleep and rest. It is becoming increasingly clear that the so-called “resting” brain is actually hard at work processing recent experience, integrating new memories into existing semantic networks, and preparing us for the future.
