Extinction Rebellion Fairfield County CT
The criminal inaction of the US Government around climate chaos & biodiversity loss cannot be tolerated.
We commit ourselves to Nonviolent Direct Action in the greater NYC area in service of our four demands.
Do you know that green grass is a literal "dead zone," the chemicals used to support it kill off the ecosystem and all surrounding life, poisoning us and the water in the area? There are 50 million acres of grass lawn dead zones on the globe right now. A lawn is a lie fed to use last century as a staple of American life, and the chemical companies are the only ones profiting, while our Earth, insects and birds die. In a shifting climate, with environmental diversity going extinct, it’s never been more important to propagate native plants. Here’s how. It's easy and rewarding to return your grass lawn to a native, pollinating landscape and do your part to save us from extinction, while we fight big oil and coal. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/08/realestate/growing-wildflowers-isnt-difficult-and-its-urgent.html?fbclid=IwAR0_5CYB34GVM8tYoXFHIi1AmaW06oXWiMwM-CTYgDUuFrkUTWvZagYL3OM
Growing Wildflowers Isn’t Difficult. And It’s Urgent. In a shifting climate, with environmental diversity at risk, it’s never been more important to propagate native plants. Here’s how.

Despite all efforts done, landfills grow at an incredible pace. It is estimated that the equivalent of 1 full truck of plastic is dumped into the ocean every minute! That sums up at 8 million tons of plastic every year.
The Earth, especially its oceans, and wildlife, are dying from plastic waste.
👉 What can we do?
• share the knowledge as much as you can, a lot of people use plastic just as a habit, they need someone to open their eyes.
• refuse to buy products wrapped in plastic, make an effort to find alternatives.
• If you order take out tell them you don't want utensils.
• When you order a drink at a restaurant tell the waiter No Straw as you order your drink.
• talk to vendors and supermarkets you shop at, they need to hear their customers.
• stop buying bottled water
• bring your own shopping bag, reusable coffee cups, etc.
• do your own research and let’s not be part of plastic world 🌱🌱🌱
It's Earth Day and there is so much that you can do each day to help. Here are a few ideas: STOP using single use plastic, always carry a water bottle and buy glass straws, that live forever. Why, have a look at the photos. Every time you order in a restaurant, make sure to tell them before you order your drink "no straws." Where does single use plastic end up? All over the Earth, and eventually in our systems. Let's create a place that our grandchildren can love and live in!
10 years ago we didn’t know what a “Polar Vortex” was.

This is the global climate catastrophe we are fighting against. If it sounds complicated, it's not-all you need is 4 minutes to read how this is happening: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1361853137175408642.html
TWO THINGS YOU CAN DO NOW. With the continuing Arctic blasts, more extreme temperature ranges and continuing depressing news it, it's tough to know what to do. But there are two things you can do NOW to help the planet: 1) buy glass straws for yourself, family and friends and never throw out a plastic straw -that will live on the planet for 500+ years- again! 2) Save beaches and landfills from the waste of non disposable plastic laundry jugs by buying laundry strips-cheaper for you, better for the planet, it's a win!

Happy New Year! The prevailing sentiment is clear: good riddance 2020! Here’s to (hopefully) brighter tomorrows.
That said, if 2021 is to offer us the beacon of hope we so badly need, it will be because of everyday people coming together to build a better world. It will take all of us to make those brighter tomorrows happen.
A better world is possible - but only if we work for it.
Here are a few easy climate new year’s resolutions you may want to consider. While too much emphasis on individual lifestyle changes won’t help us solve the climate crisis, there are still things we can do as individuals to help our overall goal of system change.
-Talk about the crisis: Help keep climate at the forefront of people’s minds by bringing it up in everyday conversation as often as possible. Here’s a study that shows why this helps. https://www.pnas.org/content/116/30/14804?link_id=3&can_id=a92a9c1c4f42375b051b294e98acb75b&source=email-happy-new-year-127&email_referrer=email_1034714&email_subject=happy-new-year
-Consume less: Reduce and reuse are more effective than recycle! See this great article from 2014 about the links between consumerism and climate catastrophe. https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/change-within-obstacles-we-face-are-not-just-external/?link_id=4&can_id=a92a9c1c4f42375b051b294e98acb75b&source=email-happy-new-year-127&email_referrer=email_1034714&email_subject=happy-new-year
Re-evaluate your relationship with animal products: Yes, demand for meat does affect how much is produced. Need another reason? Industrial animal farming poses a huge risk in terms of future pandemics. Here’s nine major ones that have been traced back to animal farming. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/ng-interactive/2020/sep/15/covid-farm-animals-and-pandemics-diseases-that-changed-the-world?link_id=6&can_id=a92a9c1c4f42375b051b294e98acb75b&source=email-happy-new-year-127&email_referrer=email_1034714&email_subject=happy-new-year
-Get involved in our global movement, while our local Fairfield group is on pause, NYC is as active as can be: https://www.xrebellion.nyc/?link_id=13&can_id=a92a9c1c4f42375b051b294e98acb75b&source=email-happy-new-year-127&email_referrer=email_1034714&email_subject=happy-new-year

Good, and SUPER CUTE, news from Wanuskewin Park in Saskatchewan, Canada, a baby bison was born! Wanuskewin’s bison are a conservation herd. These North American grasslands are one of the most endangered biomes in the world. By introducing bison back to the land in December 2019 (bison previously went extinct there in the 19th C.), native grasses will be restored and the habitat will return. The Canadian government has done a great job towards restoring this important land back to balance where the animals, grasslands, human populations and spirit are whole again. https://bdnewsalert.com/wanuskewin-heritage-park-welcomes-1st-baby-bison-since-1876/?fbclid=IwAR121K9ILTJFG9hvUMD0hoVnUyFBQZjYzQ28rPmixV-JlwQMarjFjZ2Fv04

Early ages of human civilization were defined by stone, bronze, and iron, but archaeologists fear our era's lasting mark on the planet may be plastic pollution. Over 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic have been produced in the last 70 years and almost all of it still exists on the planet, most of it is not biodegradable. For this reason, some archaeologists are calling this "the plastic age." Do everything you can to stop using one use plastics. When you order take out let them know you do not want the plastic cutlery, carry your own water bottle with you at all time, do not use plastic bags-carry your own cloth grocery bags, buy in bulk, do not buy plastic packaged foods....these are just a few things you can do to make a huge difference.
Did you know that the Arctic environment will be GONE by the next generation? We used to have regular snow in Connecticut, and now we have one, maybe two, snowstorms per winter. What can you do NOW? Reducing the effects of climate change means reducing our CO2 emissions. This means everyone making the effort to turn off lights, recycle, walk to work, take public transport, and so on. This will make the world a better place for all of us.

The current administration is decimating the environment, here is the latest. Make sure to VOTE! This is happening today! https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/24/climate/tongass-logging.html (photos by Christopher Miller)
This year the planet has been affected by climate change more than any other year. Uncontrollable fires are normal, as are hurricanes, insect populations are 70% of what they were a few decades ago, bird populations about half. Animals, mammals and plants species go completely extinct each year, and each year more than the last. We need governments around the world to decrease fossil fuel production, work on implementing clean energy, put regulations in place that discourage production of single use plastics, and preservation of rare ecosystems that took millenia to create, and cannot come back. The current administration of many governments around the globe are decimating the planet, leaving a stark world for our children and grandchildren. You can see the damage that the last four years has done to the planet. Let's all work for change, to keep our resources intact, and a livable planet for all species, including us. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/climate/trump-environment-rollbacks-list.html

4 Reasons why you shouldn't have a fall or spring "cleanup"-leaves provide 1) bumble bee burrowing 2) caterpillar wintering 3) egg hatching 4) free mulch. Leaves provide hibernation, protection and warmth to so many insects, that become food for birds. The planet is in crises with 70% fewer birds in existence than 40 years ago. Ecosystems are disappearing and the planet needs your backyard ecosystem. There are 70 million acres of lawns on the planet, can you imagine if these lawns were left to their native pollinating ecosystems? Cutting back on disposable plastics, reusing the same grocery bags, carrying your own water bottle, planting pollinating gardens, walking & bicycling in place of driving, there are so many ways to help the environment. However, the main cause of environmental degradation are fossil fuels, warming our planet faster than scientists predicted when they first discovered the ozone hole decades ago. Besides petitioning to the government to use clean energy, and voting those officials in, here's what you can do: https://rebellion.global/blog/2020/09/21/ethical-banks/?link_id=14&can_id=a92a9c1c4f42375b051b294e98acb75b&source=email-rebellion-and-on-and-on-global-newsletter-44&email_referrer=email_952756&email_subject=rebellion-and-on-and-on-global-newsletter-44

The environment is being killed off NOW. What can you do?
Land and forests: Protecting habitats and reducing the degradation of soil;
Food: Eating a more sustainable diet with, primarily, more moderate consumption of meat and fish and "dramatic cuts" in waste;
Sustainable agriculture: redesigning the way we farm to minimise the negative impact on nature through things like forest clearance and intensive use of fertilisers and pesticides;
Oceans and fisheries: Protecting and restoring marine ecosystems and fishing sustainably - allowing stocks to recover and important marine habitats to be protected
Urban greening: Making more space for nature in towns and cities, where almost three-quarters of us live;
Freshwater: Protecting lake and river habitats, reducing pollution and improving water quality;
Urgent climate action: Taking action on climate change with a "rapid phasing out" of fossil fuels;
A 'One Health' approach: This encompasses all of the above. It essentially means managing our whole environment - whether it is urban, agricultural, forests or fisheries - with a view to promoting "a healthy environment and healthy people".

Droughts, deathly temperatures, fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, storms & floods occur each year at "unprecedented" levels. Climate change brought on by humans is causing our extinction. As the planet heads into its Sixth Mass Extinction, the youth of the world looks to those in power for safety and hope. If we keep allowing mass capitalists and authoritarian governments to go about business as usual, there will be nothing left for our children. They will not have the option of playing outside without first checking the air quality on their phones. They will not have the option of building relationships and friendships in schools if they have to constantly distance from new diseases. Empires and industrial legacies are not sustainable if they are built on toxic land and sea. We must ACT NOW for the sake of our planet, and for those we love and strive to protect every day.
The good news is you and I can be part of the solution! 1) Challenge yourself and others to minimize plastic use and you might be surprised how many alternatives already exist. For example, when shopping, bring your own reusable bags, don’t use plastic bags for fruits and vegetables, or plastic bottles for drinking, drink from reusable canisters...encourage your local stores to stop using so much plastic and tell your local restaurants to switch to biodegradable material. https://savethereef.org/about-sup.html 2) Please Stop spraying your lawns and vegetation with these harmful chemicals! Use Natural Herbicides instead, Or...just don’t spray at all. 3) Look to clean and renewable energy...Solar, wind and electric vehicles! Use more ride sharing as much as possible, start walking more or riding bikes...anything we can do to reduce our dependence on the stuff that’s killing our planet. 4) Read this sunscreen guide https://savethereef.org/about-reef-save-sunscreen.html
They are the front line. The farm workers, who gather our food all day, every day. Despite the degraded environment that brings record fires, unimaginable heatwaves, 5x torrential rains than a decade ago, and now a pandemic. For less than minimum wage, they sweat, without federal protections, with ICE trying to imprison them, without celebrity representation. And they continue on, working hard every day, gathering food for us, and each year their work becomes more difficult because our environment is collapsing. These are the real heroes.
Balloons are not biodegradable. They are so lightweight and have been found to travel 124 miles. Where do they end up? In animal’s and bird’s digestive tracks where they cause choking and blockage that eventually starves the animal. The photo below is of “biodegradable balloons” 4 months after they were compostés for a study and they remain completely unchanged. Read on for the latest study and please use biodegradable decor for your next party. Thanks for reading!
We composted 'biodegradable' balloons. Here's what we found after 16 weeks Since 1989, the balloon industry has relied on a problematic study that claimed balloons degraded “at about the same rate as oak tree leaves” after six weeks. We put it to the test.
