It is a momentous day for Spencer, his family and Gresham Fire. It tugs at the heart for all the right reasons.

7 total surgeries
Over 80 units of blood
Over 5 weeks spent in ECMO, 2 months total on life support
103 days in the hospital

Spencer Tejedas walked out of the hospital today on his own.

Thank you to our neighboring fire agencies Portland Fire & Rescue and Clackamas Fire who provided coverage for our on-duty crews so they could be there to support Spencer on his way to recovery!

Multnomah County Fire Departments & Districts to Implement Summer Burn Ban Starts Today July 2, 2024.

Multnomah County, OR - The Multnomah County Fire Defense Board has announced a burn ban for all areas of Multnomah County. The Multnomah County Fire Defense Board, comprised of local fire chiefs within the district or chief officers with authority to make decisions on behalf of a fire chief, serves a crucial role in supporting the Department of the State Fire Marshal’s “Oregon Fire Service Mobilization Plan” as identified in ORS 476.590. Additionally, these boards facilitate local fire agency business at the county area level, including planning, prevention, and mutual & auto-aid agreements toward fire suppression efforts.

A strategic approach to implementing a burn ban considers the County’s agricultural concerns and aligns with the weather forecast provided by the Pacific Northwest Geographic Area Coordinating Center. This ban includes backyard burning, recreational campfires and fire pits, and agricultural burning (including agricultural wastes, crops, field burning, and permitted open burning for land clearing, slash, stump, debris, or controlled burning). The complete burn ban will remain in effect throughout the summer weather season.

Residents are encouraged to contact their local Fire Department/District for detailed information.

503-823-3700 for Portland Fire & Rescue - General Information

While outdoor barbecuing using grills, smokers, and similar cooking appliances remains permissible, residents are urged to exercise utmost caution. When using charcoal briquettes, ensure proper disposal of ashes in a covered metal container away from combustibles, and keep the ashes wet for several days before disposal. Maintain a minimum distance of ten feet between outdoor cooking setups and anything combustible, such as siding, fences, or shrubbery.

Smokers are reminded to extinguish ci******es completely before disposal. Residents in rural settings are asked to maintain defensible space around structures by monitoring vegetation growth around homes and structures and ensuring adequate access to firefighting equipment.

GRESHAM, Ore. - At approximately 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, Gresham Fire Department and Portland Fire and Rescue responded to the reports of a duplex on fire at the 1300 block of Southeast 182nd Street. Due to the quick work of the responding crews, the fire was able to be contained to a single duplex unit and no civilians were injured.

This was a complex response as the nature of the fire evolved rapidly. During the incident, three Gresham Firefighters sustained injuries and were transported to the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center. Two of the Firefighters have been treated and released. However, Firefighter Spencer Tejedas remains hospitalized at this time.

Firefighter Tejedas suffered severe burns on over 45% of his body. He is sedated and intubated at the Oregon Burn Center and is considered to be in critical condition.

"Incidents of this nature are a harrowing reminder that despite our best efforts with robust training and protective gear just how dangerous the job of a firefighter is," said Gresham Fire Chief Scott Lewis. "Our hearts go out to the entire Tejedas family."

The Gresham Fire Department would like to ask that the privacy of the Tejedas family be respected during this challenging time.

After further investigation, it has been determined that the fire was accidental and caused by an unattended candle.

Gresham Fire crews were busy yesterday 🔥

At approximately 2:39 PM Gresham Fire was dispatched to a Commercial Fire. The fire was a large residential detached garage. Crews were able to control the fire with some extension to a couple of all-terrain vehicles, trees, and a shed. There were no injuries.

Then, at approximately 2:42 PM Gresham fire was dispatched to a residential fire. Due to limited Gresham resources with the commercial fire, Gresham’s Fire Chief responded with the only apparatus left available in the City, Rescue 74.

Our mutual aid partners, Portland Fire and Rescue responded with additional resources.

Upon arrival there was no fire but smoke present in the house. A heat lamp that had tipped over and burned through the flooring. Crews assisted with removing the smoke from the home before returning to service.
