NEWS RELEASE: Three Multnomah County daytime cooling centers reopen noon to 10 p.m. today, Tuesday, June 9 07/09/2024

NEWS RELEASE: Three Multnomah County daytime cooling centers reopen noon to 10 p.m. today, Tuesday, June 9 Cooling centers are not planned to reopen Wednesday, July 10, with dangerous heat expected to peak today before subsiding this evening into tomorrow morning.

07/08/2024

PLEASE SHARE: 🌇 Please take this heatwave seriously. A heatwave isn't just uncomfortable, it's dangerous. While some apps may show temperatures only in the 90s, they could surge much higher and last much longer.

🏠Remember, the danger isn't limited to the outdoors; those without adequate cooling or air conditioning indoors are at serious risk, too, especially people living alone, older adults, and those with disabling conditions.

🤝 Ask neighbors, friends, and family about their plans to stay cool. Check on older neighbors and relatives, even if they typically prefer to be independent.

🧊Make a plan to get to a cool, air-conditioned space, like a cooling center or another cool space listed on our interactive map of libraries, splash pads, and other sites: bit.ly/3L9VcVL. Always confirm hours and locations before you go.

Visit multco.us/hot for latest information on Multnomah County, Oregon cooling centers and other tips. Visit an air-conditioned mall, movie theater, library or other cool public place.

TriMet won't turn away anyone riding to or from a cooling center who cannot pay fare between 10 am and 10pm daily, from today through Monday, July 8.

Anyone needing additional transportation assistance should call 211.

🛩️On June 24th the Gresham Police UAS team assisted with a rescue after a plane️ went down in the Columbia River. They were able to locate the plane and help direct the search and rescue team. Drones are able to respond more quickly, can precisely communicate location, and can help determine what support is needed. This saves critical time in an emergency.

07/05/2024

Updated cooling center and transportation information. Trimet is offering free fares to anyone heading to a cooling center who needs fare assistance.

🧊Cook Plaza, 19421 S.E. Stark St., Gresham - Cooling Center - noon - 10:00 p.m.

More at: multco.us/hot

Multnomah County is also extending hours at Gresham (385 N.W. Miller Ave., Gresham) library until 9 p.m. today, with bottled water on hand, to provide additional places where people can go during the hottest parts of the day and evening.

Multnomah County Fire Departments & Districts to Implement Summer Burn Ban Starts Today July 2, 2024.

Multnomah County, OR - The Multnomah County Fire Defense Board has announced a burn ban for all areas of Multnomah County. The Multnomah County Fire Defense Board, comprised of local fire chiefs within the district or chief officers with authority to make decisions on behalf of a fire chief, serves a crucial role in supporting the Department of the State Fire Marshal’s “Oregon Fire Service Mobilization Plan” as identified in ORS 476.590. Additionally, these boards facilitate local fire agency business at the county area level, including planning, prevention, and mutual & auto-aid agreements toward fire suppression efforts.

A strategic approach to implementing a burn ban considers the County’s agricultural concerns and aligns with the weather forecast provided by the Pacific Northwest Geographic Area Coordinating Center. This ban includes backyard burning, recreational campfires and fire pits, and agricultural burning (including agricultural wastes, crops, field burning, and permitted open burning for land clearing, slash, stump, debris, or controlled burning). The complete burn ban will remain in effect throughout the summer weather season.

Residents are encouraged to contact their local Fire Department/District for detailed information.

While outdoor barbecuing using grills, smokers, and similar cooking appliances remains permissible, residents are urged to exercise utmost caution. When using charcoal briquettes, ensure proper disposal of ashes in a covered metal container away from combustibles, and keep the ashes wet for several days before disposal. Maintain a minimum distance of ten feet between outdoor cooking setups and anything combustible, such as siding, fences, or shrubbery.

Smokers are reminded to extinguish ci******es completely before disposal. Residents in rural settings are asked to maintain defensible space around structures by monitoring vegetation growth around homes and structures and ensuring adequate access to firefighting equipment.
