We can't prevent disasters, but we can prepare for them! The Cascade Groundwater Alliance, a partnership between the City of Gresham and Rockwood Water People’s Utility District, is expanding our groundwater system to prepare for emergencies. How we’re doing it:

*UPDATE - Cooling centers will remain open Friday, September 6.
Starting today, Thursday, September 5, Multnomah County will open two cooling centers at noon due to the excessive heat.
-Cook Plaza, 19421 S.E. Stark St., Gresham (staffed by Cultivate Initiatives)
-Portland Covenant Church, 4046 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Portland (staffed by Do Good Multnomah)
TriMet won't turn away anyone riding to or from a cooling center who cannot pay fare between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5.
On Thursday and Friday, Multnomah County Library will extend hours at the Central (801 S.W. 10th Ave., Portland) and Gresham (385 N.W. Miller Ave., Gresham) libraries until 8 p.m., with bottled water on hand, to provide additional places where people can go during the hottest parts of the day and evening.

Gresham is headed back to school this week, and Gresham Police Department is pitching in with additional school zone traffic enforcement.
Speeding in school zones is dangerous. Take extra time, slow down, and watch for students as we all adjust to the fall term.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning effective Thursday, Sept. 5, at noon until Friday, Sept. 6, at 10 p.m. High temperatures of around 100 degrees are expected both days.
