This is pretty cool. If you are traveling through Northern New Mexico, you can spend the night at Philmont Scout Ranch and see some of the sights there.

Another 20-mile hike in the books. Today's hike was The Trail of 5 Lakes. It was an amazing hike that included the Twin Lakes, frog lake little crater lake and Timothy Lake. To say I was impressed with these scouts would be in understatement. And... another trail name was earned, and two more were confirmed. Welcome Chance, The Bear, and Nappy Roots (not pictured) to the club.

Thank you to all of the leaders who made this hike a success.

This is the stuff Grit is made of! Any Scout who has completed the hiking merit badge knows the challenge that comes with the 20miler. It is one of the hardest things these youth will do in their Scouting career.

In the PNW, there is nothing 'flat and fairly easy' for 20 miles. These hikers got to experience a 1700ft EG followed by a 5,300 EL. If you know, you know. Over 60 tree crossings from the Eagle Creek fire blow down. Traversing the backcountry while exploring Google's notorious misconceptions on trails. Mosquitoes galore. The beauty of fog moving across a lake. Views of Mt Hood they've never seen before, and believe me, they were mesmerized. Stunning views of the Gorge. Deer that were brave enough to come near. A little bear crossing the road on the drive up at early hours of the morning. And so much more.

More importantly, as a leader, I saw comraderie, grit, failure, success, inspiration, teamwork, independence, and skill. These are the things I've only seen acquired by a youth in Scouting. And It only happens when you create the perfect environment. This is what trained experienced leaders bring to a unit. Everyone learns something on these adventures if you're open to learning them. Thank you to the for giving us all the opportunity to learn. Thank you to all the parents who put their kids in this amazing program. Thank you to the youth who show up willing to learn.

Congratulations to the scouts and the adult leaders for completing a rigorous milestone in Scouting. Congrats to the youth who earned trail names. Funky Monkey, Bigfoot, and Crash. There are a few other names that are still undecided. Know that you did hard things and you conquered. We are so proud of you all.

Another beautiful hike in the books today. 12 miles that included Ramona Falls. The looks on their faces when we arrived were priceless. These are the moments the leaders live for and volunteer for.

Playing with ChatGPT tonight, I asked it to Write a one page essay on: What does it mean to be an eagle scout. Here is what it wrote:

Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America program. It is a significant achievement that requires a lot of dedication, perseverance, and hard work. To be an Eagle Scout means much more than just achieving a rank; it is a symbol of character, leadership, and service.

Earning the rank of Eagle Scout requires a Scout to complete a rigorous set of requirements that involve leadership, service, and outdoor skills. To become an Eagle Scout, a Scout must complete at least 21 merit badges, hold leadership positions within their troop, plan and execute a service project that benefits their community, and demonstrate a deep understanding of the Scout Oath and Law.

To become an Eagle Scout, one must embody the values of the Scout Oath and Law. These values include being trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. An Eagle Scout is a role model for others to follow, and they are expected to continue to demonstrate these values throughout their lives.

Being an Eagle Scout is not just an accomplishment for oneself, but it is also a responsibility to serve others. An Eagle Scout is expected to give back to their community through volunteer work and to lead by example. They should strive to make a positive impact on their community and to make the world a better place.

In summary, being an Eagle Scout is a significant accomplishment that requires a lot of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. It is a symbol of character, leadership, and service. An Eagle Scout is a role model for others to follow and is expected to embody the values of the Scout Oath and Law throughout their lives. They are responsible for giving back to their community and making a positive impact on the world.

I think it nailed it.
