World Multiple Sclerosis Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the disease and to provide support to those that live with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) each day.

There are approximately 2.3 million people that are impacted by this disease. MS is a disease of the brain and spinal cord. It is an unpredictable disease and effects each person differently. If you notice you have similar symptoms you should discuss it with your physician.

It is a potentially disabling illness that causes the immune system to attack the protective sheath that covers nerve fibers which in turn causes communication problems between your body and brain. This disease can cause permanent or deteriorating damage to the nerves in the body.

Symptoms of MS are numbness or weakness in the limbs typically on one side of the body at a time. Some people experience electric shock sensations that occur with certain movements. Some develop tremors, lack of coordination, or an unsteady gait in their walk. Some other symptoms may include visual impairments, slurred speech, fatigue, and dizziness.

There is no cure for MS, but there are treatments that help slow the progression of MS and lessen symptoms. Through research, hopefully one, day their will be. To help those impacted by MS learn more about the condition, contribute through donations, and help others understand if you live with MS how the condition impacts your life.

Today is National Sunscreen Day and we want to talk about your beautiful skin. Your skin is the largest organ on your body, and it is susceptible to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. UV rays are associated with the development of skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, an estimated 3.6 million cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year. This very preventable cancer can be prevented with the use of sunscreen and avoiding tanning.

Sunscreen comes in many forms such as lotions, creams, gels, sticks, or sprays. On sunscreen containers you will see the acronym SPF (Sun Protection Factor), which measures how much protection it can offer from UVB and UVA rays from the sun. You should wear a sunscreen product with an SPF of at least 30 and reapply every two hours. You should reapply more often if you are swimming or sweating. Sunscreen should be applied no matter how dark or light your skin complexion is. Everyone’s skin is vulnerable to damaging UV rays. As summer creeps in, make sure you protect your skin!

Did you know that arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the US? It affects many adults and even children. In the spirit of Arthritis Awareness Month, we would like to educate you and clear up some misunderstandings.

The number one misconception about this condition is it only affects the elderly. More than 50 million adults and 300,000 children suffer from arthritis. It can occur in children as young as six months of age.

There are over 100 different forms of arthritis and related diseases. The most common are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, fibromyalgia, and gout.

It is good to catch arthritis early. If you notice symptoms of swelling and stiffness in your joints especially in the morning it would be a good idea to make an appointment with your physician.

Osteoporosis is common, serious, and costly—and it can lead to an increased risk of bone fractures, typically in the wrist, hip, and spine. Often called a silent disease because bone loss occurs without symptoms, people may not know that they have osteoporosis until their bones become so weak that a sudden bump or fall causes a fracture.

About 10 million Americans have osteoporosis, and about 34 million more are at risk. One out of every 2 women and 1 in 4 men aged 50 and older will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.

Osteoporosis is a preventable and treatable disease. Early diagnosis and treatment can reduce or prevent fractures. Call our office if you have symptoms of Osteoporosis.

In the US, skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancers. It is also the most preventable type. To protect your skin, you can wear broad-spectrum sunscreen, seek shade when outdoors, wear protective clothing, and wear water resistant sunscreen during water activities. Even on cloudy days you should wear a skin protectant.

Your skin is your largest organ on your body, and you should protect it. Early detection is important with skin cancer as it can increase your survival rate. More than 2 people die of skin cancer in the US every hour per the Skin Cancer Foundation. That is an alarming rate for a preventable illness. Having a screening conducted can detect the cancer and can also create a baseline reference for your physician should any skin anomalies occur.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that damages the small intestine upon consumption of gluten, which affects 3 million Americans. Gluten is a protein found in foods such as wheat, rye, and barley. May is Celiac Disease Awareness Month.

People who have celiac disease may or may not experience symptoms. Some of the symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, anemia, and fatigue. To treat celiac disease gluten should be eliminated from the diet.

With improved access to gluten free products, people with the disease can lead a more normal life. In time research may help discover the cause, a cure, and perhaps reduce the risk of intestinal damage for people with celiac disease.

Today is HIV Vaccine Awareness Day. On this day we thank anyone who helped work towards a safe HIV Vaccine and educating communities of the importance of HIV vaccine research. Today more than ever people who live with HIV have access to life-saving treatment such as antiretroviral therapy. A vaccine would be the next big step in managing this virus. HIV can be prevented by educating yourself and safe s*x practices such as condoms, using post-exposure prophylaxis, testing, abstinence, and never sharing syringes if you use injectable drugs. In observance of this day educate yourself and others on the potential for a HIV Vaccine, HIV prevention, safe practices, and learn more about the virus.
