Sorry kids, but summer is quickly coming to an end, and the new school year is fast approaching! Hanover Firefighters are spending time to check each Hanover School to ensure they are as safe as possible for our students.

Firefighters check the school inside and out, looking for things like proper exit signage, checking fire extinguisher service dates, testing fire alarms, testing AED’s, and much more. We hope all Hanover students have an awesome start to the 2024-2025 school year!

The Hanover Fire Department has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® EMS Silver Achievement Award for its commitment to offering rapid and research-based care to patients experiencing the most severe form of heart attacks and strokes, ultimately saving lives. This award recognizes the crucial roles and performances of our paramedics in quickly recognizing and providing care and treatment to patients suffering medical emergencies.

Optimal care for heart attack and stroke patients takes coordination between EMS and healthcare systems. The Mission: Lifeline EMS® is the American Heart Association’s national initiative to advance the system of care for patients with high-risk, time-sensitive conditions, such as severe heart attacks and strokes. The program helps reduce barriers to prompt treatment — starting from when 911 is called, to EMS transport and continuing through hospital treatment and discharge.

This year is the first time Hanover Fire has participated in the Mission: Lifeline® program making the Silver Achievement Award the highest recognition possible. Data and performance outcomes from 2023 were reviewed as part of the process.

Thank you to our ALS Coordinator Firefighter/Paramedic Joe Pacella for his work collecting, analyzing and submitting information to the American Heart Association.

We'd like to introduce Carson Butler, our Summer Intern. Carson is a Hanover resident, graduate of Hanover High School and currently attending Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

You may see Carson around Town visiting our commercial occupancies. He is assisting our Department in obtaining critical information about each occupancy that will be entered into our Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System and available to responders while they are responding to or operating at incidents. Information such as property/business owner contact information, location of fire protection systems, location of utilities/shut-offs and other building specifics will be identified and electronically entered for easy access. This project is part of our overall Strategic Plan and is critical to the safe, effective, efficient and quick mitigation of an incident.

Welcome aboard, Carson!

This week, the new Hanover Ambulance 1 has been put into service. This ambulance purchase was approved by Hanover residents in May of 2022 at the Annual Town Meeting, and took over two years to arrive in Hanover. Hanover Fire took receipt of it last week, and spent time installing equipment and stocking supplies. This ambulance will replace our current Ambulance 3, which was manufactured in 2012.

Thank you to the resident of Hanover for your continued support, and providing our firefighters/paramedics with safe equipment to serve you with.

The Hanover Fire Department is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a Regional Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) in the amount of $189,818. The total approved project is $208,800 which includes a 10% local funding match. This grant will fund the delivery of the IAFF Fire Ground Survival Program for the Hanover, Hanson and Pembroke Fire Departments.

There is no other call more challenging to fire ground operations than a MAYDAY call – the unthinkable moment when a firefighter’s personal safety is in imminent danger. The purpose of the IAFF Fire Ground Survival Program is to ensure that training for MAYDAY prevention and MAYDAY operations are consistent between all firefighters, company officers and chief officers. Firefighters must be trained to perform potentially life-saving actions if they become lost, disorientated, injured, low on air or trapped.

Becoming the “gold-standard” training program across the nation and in our area, the IAFF Fire Ground Survival Program is the most comprehensive survival skills and MAYDAY prevention program currently available within the fire service. Incorporating federal regulations, proven incident management best practices and survival techniques from leaders in the field, and real case studies from experienced firefighters, the Fire Ground Survival Program aims to educate all firefighters to be prepared if the unfortunate happens.

Grant funds will provide this critical training to 60 firefighters. There are obvious benefits of this training to individual firefighters. The increased need and use of mutual aid to mitigate fire incidents makes a regional approach to this training delivery a no brainer. Having a standardized approach to MAYDAY operations and prevention greatly enhances the safety to firefighters from these three contiguous communities who work together regularly at structure fires.

Thank you to Hanover Firefighter/Paramedic Tom Duggan for his work researching, writing and submitting this grant.

Thank you once again to the students of SouthShore Technical and call firefighter Mark Montilio for their work on our new deceased member board. The old deceased member board was on display at Fire Headquarters and was taken down to accommodate renovation work that was taking place. The old board was weathered and tired looking, and lacked an update for many years. Mark took this project on happily and worked through some unique challenges to get it complete. Working in collaboration with the South Shore Technical High School, he was able to get a new Board made up along with name plates for all members who are remembered annually at our Firefighter Sunday Event. He then spent weeks and months of his spare time putting the plates in order and affixing them to the Board. Now complete, this Board will once again be displayed at Fire Headquarters so that our members can forever be remembered.

Great work by all involved!

The last award we would like to highlight is the Hanover Fire Outstanding Group Response Award. This award is presented each year to members who responded to a high acuity event requiring our firefighter/paramedics to go above and beyond their normal duties. The incident chosen often involves these members putting themselves in harm’s way, and into situations that could cause them grave injury.

This year’s award is presented to the members who responded to a high acuity incident during the winter storm of December 2023. Hanover Firefighters responded to 121 calls during the storm. One call in particular involved a large tree that fell through an occupied structure, entrapping a victim. Hanover Firefighters rushed into the structure, carefully navigating the tree, downed power lines and other obstructions to gain access to the patient. The patient was then extricated and transported to an area trauma center while receiving advanced life support care. It is for their heroic actions that we recognize the following members:

Captain/Paramedic Michael Marciello
Firefighter/EMT Timothy Kirley*
Firefighter/Paramedic Eric Barron*
Firefighter/Paramedic John Earle
Firefighter/Paramedic Joseph Pacella*
Firefighter/Paramedic Sebastian Rivas*
Firefighter/Paramedic Michael Watkins

Strong work by all!

Thank you to the Hanover resident who sent us some comedic relief the other day during the storm. Freddy the Elf, we absolutely could have used the help to get the power back on! Unfortunately, you missed the application period for our on-call Department. We do have to say though, not moving all day and flying off to the North Pole every night might have effected your chances of getting hired with us!
