Cal State East Bay Biology

We are one of the most popular majors on campus. Here we post news and scholarship opportunities.

The science of biology is concerned with living matter in all its forms, responses and interactions. It deals with the study of anything which has been or is alive; microbes, all plants and animals, including humans. The field of biology includes a large number of sub-disciplines such as anatomy, reproduction, immunology, microbiology, development, genetics, ecology, evolution, physiology, cell & molecular, systematics, and behavior.

On April 18, the Q***r Unity Student Success Center (QUSSC) opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the New University Union ❤️🏳️‍🌈

Since officially opening in 2022, the Diversity and Inclusion Student Affinity and Resource Centers (DISARC) at Cal State East Bay have been bustling hubs of engagement and support for undocumented students and students of various cultures. The QUSSC joins the existing centers as a much-needed place for students to build community, find resources and establish life-long networks.

Every party involved in the QUSSC’s opening emphasized that this moment came as the result of a concerted group effort. Read more about the QUSSC: https://www.csueastbay.edu/news-center/2024/04/queer-unity-student-success-center-opens-its-doors-at-cal-state-east-bay.html

Cal State East Bay students will share their talents beyond the Music Building walls when they perform at Carnegie Hall later this month. Professor of Music and Department Chair Buddy James was invited by MidAmerica Productions to be a guest conductor.

James said, “Many of the students are from underrepresented communities and have never even flown on a plane, and now we have the opportunity to expand their worldview.”

He goes on to say, “By making the Carnegie Hall trip as easy as possible for the students, we can change the trajectory of the students’ confidence and put wind in their sails.”

Our alumni are encouraged to get involved by supporting our music students, buying tickets to the performance and joining President Cathy Sandeen for brunch before the show.

Whether you are a person, or a roach, or a crayfish, the main signal you use adjust respiration rate is CO2. When CO2 is elevated your rate of breathing is not sufficient, so you increase your breathing (or swimmerets beat faster) to remove CO2 from circulation. Students collect data on crayfish and roaches below in the Animal Physiology lab. All the critters recovered just fine.

The science of a shimmer: The vibrant colors of birds like this fiery-throated humming bird don't come from pigments — instead, microscopic structures within the birds' feathers amplify certain wavelengths of light, depending on the angle the bird is viewed from. // Photo by iNaturalist user kkrockytop

What a Difference 150 Years Make 01/24/2023

The Hayward Fault is less than a mile from our campus. This fault generates a major quake every 150 years on average (plus/minus 60 years!). Last one was 1868 and was magnitude ~7 (about same as Loma Prieta in 1989, but ours might be centered on Hayward!). So it's been 155 years since the last one...so be ready...and stay ready for the next 55 years....
