How Old School Is The New School: The Osher Lifelong Learning Center 07/25/2024

Osher Lifelong Learning Center (OLLI) at Cal State East Bay’s Concord Center gives its students the opportunity to explore their curiosities, holding classes on everything from creative writing to kaleidoscopes. Its goal is to create a learning environment for mature learners that fosters creativity, self-discovery and peer education.

OLLI hosted two Fourth of July lectures to commemorate the holiday. Richard Bell, author and history professor from the University of Maryland, is an expert in American and 18th to 19th-century history, making him the perfect guest to talk about the legacy of the Declaration of Independence on its 248th birthday.

John Kendall Bailey, a conductor and music director in both Oakland and San Francisco, led in discussing the history of America’s most patriotic music. These guest lecturers and the event itself were an example of an important aspect of OLLI: the passion for learning and a community to do just that.

University Diversity Officer Kathleen Wong(Lau) learned the hard way to find and get the help she needed to deal with depression, but many others in the Asian American community struggle in silence.

According to data from the U.S. Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, Asian Americans are 60% less likely to utilize mental health services, even though 16.8% of those in the community experience mental illness. For those who do attempt to seek out mental health services, there can be roadblocks, including language barriers, cultural stigma and navigating the health system. There are similar gaps for Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.

As part of the $3.5 million Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration grant-funded ‘Ohana Center of Excellence for AANHPI Behavioral Health, Wong(Lau) is trying to change things through the work of the multi-institutional team she leads. Her work and the work of the ‘Ohana CoE team will be featured at the Mental Health Summit organized by the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders.

Wong will be one of the featured experts, who, along with senior federal officials, will provide insights and resources specific to the mental health needs of AA and NHPI communities.

Campers work on building their communication skills while being supported by a team of speech pathologists, education specialists, and related professionals. Siblings of those with disabilities are also welcome to join.

“Our camp focuses on building camper skills in the context of authentic relationships and interactions with supervisors, peers and volunteers,” said Shubha Kashinath, a Speech, Language & Hearing Sciences Professor and Founder/Director of Pioneer Pals.

When Estuardo Sanchez graduated in 2023 with a degree in criminal justice, he wanted to leave a legacy for his younger siblings and encourage them to follow their dreams.

As a first-generation college student, he found a home on campus through GANAS. The program introduced him to fellow students with similar interests outside of the classroom. Sanchez said, “Sure, we have different degrees, different majors. But I felt that we connected as first-generation students from our families.”

Sanchez also hoped to be an example for his community by volunteering for Fresh Lifelines for Youth and Latinos for Education. With a passion for volunteer work and helping youth in his community, Sanchez looks toward his future and hopes for a career as a probation officer.

Cal State East Bay is hosting the 10th annual Discover Engineering! Camp through June 28, hoping to inspire students to consider engineering as a future pathway to college and careers👏 Students live on campus while they learn and collaborate with others to build autonomous vehicles and bridges.

“We want to make going to college a serious possibility for the diverse, under-represented group of high school students. We also want them to consider STEM fields for college, specifically engineering,” said Farzad Shahbodaghlou, Cal State East Bay’s director of the Construction Management Program.

The six-day, five-night summer camp culminates on Thursday afternoon as teams compete, testing their creations’ functionality and strength. On Friday morning, the teams present the results of their weeklong efforts.

When Isaiah De La Cruz came to Cal State East Bay, he chose to study business administration with a concentration in finance to demystify money-related topics. “Being low income, I wondered why finance seemed to work for others, but not for us,” said De La Cruz, a first-generation graduate.

Financial literacy is a critical skill, and De La Cruz knew his pursuits in the business world would require mastery of accounting and finance. He said, “Finance is like a new language that needs to be learned and there’s a lot of power when you learn it.”

Through CBE advisory meetings, De La Cruz met alumnus Rick Juarez. De La Cruz was amazed by the similarities in their backgrounds and said, “If someone like Rick comes into your life, listen to them. There’s no substitute for years of experience.”

After his own years at Cal State East Bay, Juarez said he felt well-prepared for his next step — Harvard Business School — because he studied hard and had great professors who pushed him to excel. When Juarez meets current students, he tells them to dream big and work very hard. Juarez said, “I encourage people to ask for help. Isaiah is good at doing that. The worst the other person can say is no.”

De La Cruz will start at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth in the fall. Afterward, he is interested in pursuing a career in investment banking and credits Juarez with introducing him to the field.
