The Fed Minutes from last month’s meeting and comments from Fed Chair Powell reveal a slightly dovish and highly data-dependent stance, with Powell indicating that the economy is returning to a disinflationary path and that significant progress has been made. The minutes highlight a "K-shaped" recovery, with higher-income households benefiting from rising asset prices and lower-income households struggling with increased costs. The potential risk of increased layoffs in a cooling labor market influenced a rally in the 10-year Treasury yield, which fell below 4.30% from a recent high of 4.50%, as markets anticipate the upcoming jobs report for further insights.

Summer time is quickly approaching and the 10-year Treasury continues on its wild ride. After opening the year at 3.95%, the yield ranged between the high 4.20s and mid 4.30s. However, the month of April saw it surge past 4.70%, to then swing back to mid 4.40s, just to settle at 4.50% in the beginning of May. While many investors have kept their pencils down, others are taking now as an opportunity to amass market intelligence ahead of a turn in the market. Lenders have prepared to become increasingly active as players across the market anticipate a wave of maturities driving new loan demand, offering private credit investors a spotlight once held by banks.

The rollercoaster of 2023 saw it fall to as low as 3.25% in April and rise past 5.00% in October. Yet, just like most thrilling rides, the yield ended the cycle right where it began, closing 2023 at 3.88%.
