The Palestinian House of Friendship is an organization I’ve supported since 2014. It’s located in Nablus West Bank but I started supporting it after the 2014 Israeli attacks on Gaza which killed over 2000 Palestinians. It’s led by Mohammed Sawalha and his son Majed Sawalha. Two courageous and loving hearts doing good work and organizing their community for families and children. You will hear from them at this event June 2nd online 4:30. It’s free. https://events.humanitix.com/planting-seeds-for-democracy. Learn about the silent war happening in the West Bank where for instance this morning at 3 am Israel set fire to a vegetable market. Or yesterday when illegal settlers drove more Palestinian farmers off the land. You don’t have to hear it from me. Listen to people who have been living it for decades. Like Mohammed who started the Palestinian House of Friendship hoping to prepare his community for a democratic state. Back in 2015 I biked solo from Virginia to Oregon and raised over $5000 from beautiful supporters like you to help PHF build their music studio. Please register now and get the zoom link after so you can attend this event this Sunday at 4:30.

Nancy Hughes, one of 21 singers to perform at Singers Café tomorrow 6:30 The Marigold Easthampton. “Nancy Hughes began taking lessons from Celia Miller around 2007. She moved to Buffalo in 2009 and stopped singing for a period of time. During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, she resumed her classes online with Celia Miller. She is excited to perform in her first showcase on May 19. This, however, is not her first public performance. Nancy debuted as a fake opera singer at Margo Jones Performance Hall at Texas Woman’s University in 2000, performing in Stephanie Beauchamp’s choreographic work, “Presenting the Dixie Dora Dancer Revue,” where she sang an improvised song (often about her deceased dachshund).”

Tony Silva, our guest musician for a special performance at Singers Cafe The Marigold May 19 6:30 with Gaby Núñez Santiago. Tony Silva has been a full-time musician for over 20 years. He started as a dance accompanist at Smith College (a job he still does). In 2010 he got hired to play guitar in a Mexican Restaurant in Easthampton called La Casita Azteca. Quickly realizing that he wanted to be playing music appropriate for the venue, he started learning to play Mexican music. Then music from South and Central America. Along the way he became obsessed with Rumba Flamenca, (which is gypsy party music from Spain). He now plays for museum events, private parties and weddings. He has also composed over 50 scores for film, theater and dance.
Gaby Núñez Santiago is one of the 21 artists performing at Singers Café this Sunday May 19 at The Marigold in Easthampton. Gaby is an expressive arts therapist and budding bruja who experiences singing as a powerful tool, inviting them to ground in their body and connect to spirit. Although she’s been singing loudly in the car since she was a kid (shout out to her dad’s eardrums) and karaoke nights have offered much needed catharsis, this is their first time performing with a band. It is an honor to be witnessed!
Appearing May 19 Sunday 6:30 at Singers Café at The MArigold ocal artist Norbert A. Belliveau is a performer at heart and began singing from his crib as a toddler, according to reports from his siblings. He grew up surrounded by music and would sing along while his self-taught father played folk and spiritual songs on the piano. Norbert’s love of music developed partly due to the music his parents and siblings exposed him to growing up. At some point he developed a “fever” for Drum Corp, a marching band type competitive youth activity that he continues to feel deeply passionate about. He marched with Heatwave Drum Corp of Orlando, FL from Fall of 2003 to Fall of 2004. Norbert sang in an elementary school chorus and took piano lessons as a teen. 2008 is when he discovered Celia Miller’s compassionate approach to music and he was hooked. He has taken lessons on and off with Celia since then. Norbert has performed with both the Pioneer Valley Gay Men’s Chorus and the Hartford Gay Men’s Chorus. He has channeled his Gallaudet education and passion for Deaf culture by performing songs in American Sign Language and signed English. Norbert is deeply grateful to have this opportunity to tell stories through song.Fun Facts about Norbert: *Norbert has a fun story where he sang Happy Birthday to one of the princes of the country of Bhutan.*70’s pop star Anne Murray is a distant cousin on the Canadian side of Norbert’s family. *Norbert attended a Deaf University and was once fluent in American Sign Language.
