“Every Student Deserves Someone Special”

We just want to call attention to this awesome project led by one of our own - Janet Kim, out Special Ed Recruitment Specialist. On March 11, 2021, the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Hawai'i Public Schools launched the Every Student Deserves Someone Special campaign website. A collaborative project, spearheaded by the UHM College of Education (COE), Department of Special Education (SPED) University of Hawaii at Mānoa Department of Special Education, the campaign addresses the ongoing challenge of special education teacher recruitment and retention in Hawaiʻi.

The goal of Someonespecialforstudents is to increase the number of students pursuing a teaching degree or certificate through the UH System. In this case, the campaign specifically promotes SPED programs while helping to destigmatize special education and foster support for individuals with disabilities.

Mahalo, Dodi, for your kind words!

If you’re interested in learning more about our BCBA program, please email [email protected] and our Recruitment Specialist will be more than happy to connect with you!

“As the world moves toward more of a virtual platform, I cannot emphasize enough how important the people are in education! If it weren’t for the positive, caring, and motivated UH staff, professors, and representatives I encountered along the way, I would not have had the same level of success. Certainly, there were times life got in the way, things grew very challenging, and I even wanted to give up (there’s nothing like writing your Plan B during the birth of your fourth child or herniating a disk in your back during BCBA coursework)… but my devoted professors saw something in me and encouraged me in their own special way to stay the course. That’s what makes these accomplishments worth celebrating; the challenges we’ve had to overcome along the way. The way we’ve had to lean on each other throughout the hardships and cheer each other on to the end.”
