Saxophone and Horn duo complete semester-long residency in new music with UH composition students - The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Music Department 03/31/2022

Dr. Jennifer Blackwell (Music Education) and Performer-Composer Brian Kavolius-Matherne (Brian KM) have completed a semester-long residency working with six of UH’s graduate composition students on original compositions for Alto Saxophone and Horn. The residency, which took place in Fall 2021, consisted of reading sessions, individual meetings with composers, and informational sessions on writing for the instruments, culminating in the recording of the six works. Concert Series: Mezzo-soprano Maya Hoover with Pianist Jonathan Korth 03/11/2021

Tomorrow night we'll be streaming a live performance by our own voice professor and mezzo-soprano Maya Hoover, who will be joined by pianist Jonathan Korth. The program offers poetry representative of the past year, including settings of Rilke, D’Annunzio, and Langston Hughes, and also features works by Carlos Guastavino, Ruth Schonthal, Stefano Donaudy, Francesco Paolo Tosti, Erich Korngold, John Musto, and Tom Cipullo. Dancer Jonathan Clarke Sypert will join in on the second half.

Symphony of the Hawaiian Birds, 4th movt - Vanished Voices: A Farewell to the ʻŌʻō 04/27/2020

Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing what UH-Mānoa music students have been up to this semester and presenting some of their final "virtual" performances.

We'll start with the UH Wind Ensemble (Jeffrey Boeckman, director) who traveled to Kauai in February to premiere a new orchestration of the Symphony of the Hawaiian Birds, a work that brings together performers, composers, animators, filmmakers, scientists, educators and students. Here is composition professor Takuma Itoh's movement, a tribute to Kauai's now-extinct ʻōʻō, with animation by Jeanine Higa and Kayla Abalos.
